Lacrosse Falls to Davidson, 17-13

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop lacrosse was handed its second loss of the season after dropping a hard fought contest against Davidson at home Thursday evening, 17-13.
FIRST PERIOD
  • Winthrop earned the first draw control of the period by Iris Leavitt
  • A turnover by Abigail Hand allowed Allie Hartnett to score unassisted, putting Davidson on the board first
  • Turnovers were exchanged back and forth between the Eagles and the Wildcats until Winthrop got their first goal of the game by Tori Iannotti, tying the game 1-1
  • Davidson quickly regained their lead with a goal by Brooke Ross
  • The Wildcats put two more on the board after turnovers by Olivia Paton and a green card on Christina Warren, making it a 4-1 game
  • A successful clear attempt by Winthrop allowed Gabby Pierpont to close in the lead with an assisted goal from Christina Warren, bringing the score 4-2 at the end of the first

SECOND PERIOD
  • A series of turnovers from both the Eagles and the Winthrop kept the teams from scoring in the first five minutes of the second period
  • A foul from Davidson's Margit Crittenberger gave Ava-Claire Collins a free position shot and goal, cutting the Wildcats' lead to one
  • Another goal from Ava-Claire Collins at 09:23 tied the game 4-4, but Ross put the Wildcats back into the lead with two unassisted goals
  • A failed clear attempt by Davidson turnover from Tema Wagner allowed Iannotti to net a goal with an assist from Paton, making it a 6-5 game
  • Davidson's Aeryn Curren increased the Wildcats' lead by two, but a goal from Christina Warren put the game within one at the 04:17 mark
  • A free position shot by Mali White brought the lead up to two, which was then met by a goal from Emily Hollinger, ending the second period with a score of 8-7

THIRD PERIOD
  • Winthrop tied the game at the beginning of the third period 8-8 with a goal from Katie Seiler
  • Davidson then notched two more goals to make it a 10-8 game with a free position shot from Curren and an assisted goal by Jenna Skibbe
  • Collins got her third goal of the game to put the Eagles within one at the 04:42 mark
  • Davidson then scored three goals back-to-back-to-back to give them a 13-9 lead going into the fourth
  • The Wildcats held Winthrop to two goals during the third period

FOURTH PERIOD
  • Davidson increased its lead to five early into the fourth with a goal from Kaitlyn Uller
  • Hollinger then brought the Eagles into double digits with a free position goal
  • The Wildcats fired back with a free position goal by Keira Best and Uller's second goal of the game, making the score 16-10
  • Shots, turnovers, and failed clear attempts kept both teams from scoring until the 04:30 mark with a goal from Ross
  • Winthrop surged late in the last few minutes of the fourth period with goals from Paton, Leavitt, and Iannotti, but ultimately fell 17-13 to the Wildcats
