Softball Battles #19 South Carolina In One Run Loss

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball dropped a hard fought battle to 19th-ranked South Carolina Wednesday night in a 5-4 loss on Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck first in the bottom of the second has Annelisa Winebarger took a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left to lead 1-0
  • In the bottom of the third, the Eagles increased their lead as Darrah Nickens singled to short as Emma Roberson scored from third on the play
  • Then Tia Beckham stood in and smacked a two-run home run to left for a 4-0 lead
  • Gamecocks responded with three runs of their own in the top half of the fourth
  • Arianna Rodi drew a lead off walk and eventually moved to third on a throwing error into the infield
  • Rodi scored on a line out to center as Roberson made a diving catch and Rodi raced home
  • Jamie Mackay following with a single to left and moved to second on the throw home
  • Then Alyssa Hovermale doubled to left to plate Mackay and cut the Winthrop lead to 4-3
  • The game was tied in the fifth inning as Nia McKnight drove home a run with a grounder to second that led to a force out at second base
  • Hovermale led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to center to give South Carolina a 5-4 advantage

EXTRA BASES
  • This was the fifth one run game of the season for the Eagles as they are now 2-3 in one run contests
  • Beckham extended her hitting streak to seven games and has now reached safely in eight straight games
  • Carli Pearson improved her streak of reaching base to six games
  • Beckham has now homered in back-to-back games
  • Two of the last three meetings between Winthrop and South Carolina have been one run games

ON DECK
Winthrop is off to Greenville, S.C. Feb. 27-Mar. 1 for the Paladin Invitational. Winthrop opens up play on Friday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. against West Georgia followed by a matchup with Seton Hall at 3:30 p.m.
