High Point, N.C. – Winthrop nearly pulled off another big comeback as it dropped a hard fought battle 89-87 at High Point, Saturday afternoon in a matchup of the Big South's top two teams.

- Tyler Anderson (23 points, 11 rebounds, assist)
- Owen Aquino (12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists)

FIRST HALF
- Eagles won the tip and went right into Logan Duncomb in the post and he scored at the rim for the early lead
- Panthers responded with a 12-0 run trigged by five points from Terry Anderson that included a step-back three for an 11-2 advantage
- Tommy Kamarad knocked down a jumper to end the run, but Owen Aquino answered with a triple for High Point followed by a basket by Anderson at the rim to lead 17-4 at the 13:25 mark
- The Panthers led 33-16 after a Vincent Brady III three at the 7:51 mark, their largest lead of the first half
- Eagles responded with a 7-0 run that started with two Ed Nnamoko free throws followed by two free throws from Kamarad and a Josh Meo three to trail by 10 with 6:55 left in the half
- Panthers pushed the lead back to 13 points with 4:44 left but a Kareem Rozier three made it a 10 point game with just over four minutes remaining
- The Rozier three was followed by a short jumper from Kamarad to cut the deficit to single-digits
- Winthrop pulled within five points with 2:25 left after Rozier dropped in a floater off glass for an And 1 and converted the free throw to trail 38-35
- It was a four-point deficit after Seifeldin Hendawy scored off glass to trail 39-35 with 1:19 left but the Panthers scored the final three points of the half to lead 42-35 at the break
SECOND HALF
- Eagles scored the first points of the second half as Duncomb score at the rim
- The teams traded buckets over the next few possessions until Braden Hausen drilled a three for an 11-point lead at the 17:26 mark
- Kody Clouet got the deficit back to single-digits on the ensuing possession as he scored off the drive
- Hausen hit another three at the 13:10 mark to give High Point a 62-50 lead
- That three by Hausen jump started a 9-2 run that saw High Point increase the lead to 68-52 with 11:06 to play
- Clouet stopped the run as he buried a three to make it a 13-point lead for the Panthers
- Eagles trailed 70-55 when they put together a 16-0 to take the lead with 5:47 remaining
- It started with Isaiah Wilson scoring at the rim and then two free throws from Clouet
- Then off a defensive board Rozier pushed the ball up the floor and connected with Kamarad for a dunk to bring the deficit back to single-digits
- Clouet and Seifeldin Hendawy each scored on a drive to make it a five point game with 7:21 to play
- Duncomb's three-point play made it a two point game before Clouet buried a straight away three for a 71-70 lead
- The game was tied 73-73 with 4:54 left after Duncomb made two free throws
- Cam'Ron Fletcher put High Point back in the lead with a wing three
- Eagles battled the rest of the way, but the Panthers held on for the two point win
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Eagles shot 54 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 44 percent while the Panthers shot 49 percent
- Winthrop was 8-for-27 behind the arc while High Point finished 11-for-31
- The teams combined for 50 free throw attempts as Winthrop was 15-of-20 and High Point was 24-for-30
- Winthrop had the advantage on the glass 41-34 and had 18 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second chance points
- Eagles outscored the Panthers 46-32 in the paint while High Point outscored the Eagles 24-13 on fast break points
- Logan Duncomb led the Eagles with 23 points as he notched his 12th double-double of the season, finishing with 14 rebounds
- Clouet dropped in 20 points as he was 4-for-8behind the arc
NOTABLES
- The Eagles winning streak comes to an end at 12 straight, tied for the 6th longest streak in program history
- Duncomb finished the game 3-of-6 at the free throw line and in the process broke the Winthrop single-season record for free throws made (173) and free throws attempted (239)
- He broke Keon Johnson's record from 2016-17 with 171 free throws and Charles Brunson's attempt mark (235) set in 1980-81
- Eagles have won 20 of their last 23 regular season league games
UP NEXT
The Eagles remain on the road for a second straight game as they'll head to North Charleston, S.C. on Thursday, Feb. 26 to take on Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.
