Berry's 21 Leads Eagles In Loss At Charleston Southern

N. Charleston, S.C. – Winthrop nearly overcame a late double-digit deficit as Kareem Rozier's last second shot was just off the mark as Charleston Southern held on for the 86-84 victory, Thursday evening in Big South Conference men's basketball.
 
WINTHROP (20-10, 12-3 Big South) CHARLESTON SOUTHERN (14-16, 5-10 Big South)
  • A'lahn Sumler (20 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists)
  • Jaquias Franklin (24 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, steal)
  • Jesse Hafemeister (16 points, 6 rebounds, assist, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • Olalere Lase scored the first bucket of the game as he finished with a dunk off a feed from Sumler A'lahn
  • Daylen Berry responded with a pull up jumper to tie the game at 2-2
  • Berry scored again off a drive to give the Eagles their first lead at 4-2
  • A three-point play by Lase put the Bucs up 7-4 at the 17:29 mark
  • Charleston Southern doubled up the Eagles 12-6 after two free throws from Lase at the 15:40 mark
  • With 13:28 to play in the half, Tommy Kamarad got the ball in the post to Logan Duncomb and he dropped in a hook shot to trail 12-8
  • Trailing 13-8, Kody Clouet came back into the game and immediately made an impact as he buried a three
  • Winthrop tied the game at 13-13 as Ed Nnamoko scored at the rim
  • Clouet tied the game at 19-19 with 9:11 remaining in the half, but Jaquias Franklin knocked down back-to-back threes to put the Bucs up by six
  • Eagles made it a one possession game again with 6:57 left as Berry's steal led to Seifeldin Hendawy driving straight to the basket and scoring to trail 25-23
  • The Bucs responded with a 6-0 spurt to extend the lead to eight points with just under six minutes left, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout
  • Kareem Rozier and Clouet hit back-to-back threes with under two minutes left to regain the lead at 36-35
  • The lead was short lived as Jesse Hafemeister dropped in a three followed by two free throws from Sumler to hold a 42-36 lead at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Winthrop took a one point lead at the 16:34 mark as Nnamoko scored an And 1 and completed the three-point play to lead 45-44
  • Nate Bradford answered for the Bucs as he drilled a three to put the Bucs back in the lead
  • Hendawy gave the Eagles a 51-50 lead with 13:10 to play, but Sumler responded with a three to ignite a 14-4 run by the Bucs over the next four minutes to lead 64-54
  • Berry hit his third three of the game at the 8:33 mark to pull the Eagles within 64-57
  • Winthrop responded with three straight triple that included Berry knocking down back-to-back threes and then Rozier in transition drilled a three from the left wing to lead 65-64 with 6:45 to play
  • Nnamoko mad two free throws at the 4:32 mark to make it a one possession game as the Eagles trailed 73-71
  • Five straight points from Franklin followed by a three from Sumler put the Bucs back up by double-digits with 2:12 remaining
  • Eagles trailed 83-75 with 48 seconds left as Kamarad stole the inbound and went the distance to finish at the other end to make it a six point game with 45 seconds left
  • Out of the timeout the Eagles got another steam as Kamarad knocked the ball away but Rozier's bounce pass to Nnamoko was low and out of bounds with 35 seconds left
  • With 32 seconds left, Isaiah Wilson jumped in front to steal a pass and then threw the ball off a Charleston Southern Player to give the Eagles the ball
  • Out of the inbound, Rozier drove to the lane and scored with 26 seconds left as they trailed 83-79
  • Eagles nearly had another steal out of the following inbound, but Sumler was fouled with 25.2 seconds left and he connected on 1-of-2 to lead by five
  • On the ensuing possession Rozier got the ball up the floor quickly and into the hands of Clouet as he drained a three to trail 84-82 with 17.8 seconds left
  • Eagles fouled quickly with 16.5 seconds left as Sumler went to the line again as he converted both to lead 86-82
  • Eagles attacked the basket quickly as Clouet scored at the rim and Winthrop fouled with 5.6 seconds left
  • Luke Williams went to the free throw line and missed both free throws as the Eagles boarded the miss as Rozier dribbled across midcourt as he pulled up for three and the win but the shot was just off the mark on the right side of the rim

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop finished the game shooting 37 percent from the floor, 37 percent behind the arc and 22-of-34 (65%) at the free throw line
  • Charleston Southern shot 44 percent from the floor, was 14-of-37 (38%) from three and 12-of-21 at the free throw line
  • Eagles outrebounded the Bucs 52-42, which included 21 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points
  • Winthrop finished with 10 steals, as Logan Duncomb had a team-high three before he exited the first half with an injury

NOTABLES
  • With this first three of the game, Clouet became the 9th Eagle to hit 80 or more threes in a single-season
  • Clouet finished with four and now has 83, which is the 9th most in a single-season by an Eagle and just one back of seventh, four behind sixth
  • Eagles finished with 10 threes, the 17th time this season with 10 or more in a game which is tied for the second most in a season
  • Winthrop's win streak at the Buc Dome came to an end at 11 straight and the Eagles had won 12 straight overall against the Bucs

The Eagles conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 28 as they welcome Presbyterian College to the Winthrop Coliseum for a 4 p.m. matchup. There will be a "Senior Day" recognition ceremony held pregame to begin approximately at 3:35 p.m.
