Eagles Outlasts Queens 13-12 in Double-Overtime

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop lacrosse won its second overtime thriller of the season at home 13-12 against Queens (N.C.) on Saturday after a successful free position goal from Christina Warren.
FIRST PERIOD
  • Winthrop earned the first draw control of the period by Tori Iannotti with a ground ball from Gabby Pierpont
  • Both teams struggled to get on the board in the first half of the period, with both offenses turning the ball over multiple times
  • The first goal of the game was scored by the Lions by Camryn Myers at the 08:02 mark
  • A successful clear attempt put Queens back in the scoring range and allowed Lexy Stevenson to put the Lions up 2-0
  • A foul from Isabella Swanson led to a free position shot by Warren, which earned the Eagles' first goal of the game
  • The period ended with Queens leading Winthrop 2-1

SECOND PERIOD
  • Queens opened the second period with a wide shot on goal by Swanson
  • Two saves by goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay prevented Queens from adding onto their lead until 8:54, where a goal from Michela Paterson brought the lead up to 3-1
  • Goals by Iannotti and Iris Leavitt would tie the game 3-3
  • Paterson broke the tie with an unassisted goal at 02:00, her second goal of the game
  • A save by Lions' goalkeeper Gianna Coburn allowed Queens to have a successful clear attempt and add another goal to their lead by Kaylee Favreau, making it a 5-3 game
  • The Eagles were outscored by the Lions in the first two periods

THIRD PERIOD
  • Queens earned the first draw control of the period by Swanson
  • Winthrop got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Iannotti, cutting into the Lions' lead 5-4
  • Turnovers occurred on both offenses leaving both teams scoreless until Iannotti's second goal of the period tied the game 5-5 at the 10:14 mark
  • A free position goal by Swanson after a foul from Danielle Iadanza caused the Lions to take the lead again at 06:10
  • Turnovers by Queens and saves by Lindsay prevented the Lions from scoring any more in the period
  • Winthrop took the lead 9-6 going into the fourth period with goals from Iannotti, Emily Hollinger, and two goals by Leavitt

FOURTH PERIOD
  • Queens bounced back quickly in the top of the fourth, scoring three goals in the first five minutes to tie the game 9-9
  • Iannotti's fifth and sixth goals of the game gave Winthrop the 11-9 lead
  • Multiple turnovers by the Eagles allowed Stevenson to get back-to-back goals to tie the game up 11-11
  • Christina Warren got Winthrop the lead after an unassisted goal at the 01:28 mark
  • A last-second foul on Chloe Patterson allowed the Lions to tie the game 12-12 with a free position goal, sending it into overtime

FIFTH PERIOD (OT)
  • Leavitt got the draw control to start the fifth period for the Eagles
  • Turnovers by Paterson and Swanson prevented the Lions from scoring in the first overtime period
  • A pair of saves from goalkeeper Coburn also prevented Winthrop from scoring in 1OT

SIXTH PERIOD (2OT)
  • Queens started off the second overtime period with a draw control by Favreau
  • A turnover by Stevenson allowed Patterson to earn Winthrop a successful clear attempt
  • Sydney Fraser then got a foul on Warren, which led to a free position shot attempt and goal by Warren, with the Eagles winning 13-12

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Warren earned her second hat trick of the season (first one was against Campbell on 2/14)
  • Iannotti earned her first sock trick of the season and led the team in goals (6) for back-to-back games
  • Iris Leavitt earned her first hat trick of the season
  • Pierpont led the team in ground balls (6), marking a career-high
  • The Eagles led in ground balls 27-24
  • The Eagles caused 24 turnovers to the Lions, who caused 17 to Winthrop
  • Winthrop went 21-24 in clear attempts
