Eagles Late Rally Falls Short Against Campbell

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop lacrosse dropped its first game of the season after manufacturing a late surge in the second half, 16-15, at home against Campbell.
FIRST PERIOD
  • Winthrop earned the first draw control of the period by Ava-Claire Collins
  • A successful clear attempt by Collins allowed Tori Iannotti to score unassisted, putting Winthrop on the board first
  • Turnovers were exchanged back and forth between the Eagles and the Camels until Winthrop netted another goal by Iris Leavitt, bringing the lead 2-0
  • A turnover by Ashlee Gensits allowed Campbell to get on the board with a goal from Chloe Annibill at the 11:45 mark
  • A free position attempt turned into a goal for Campbell by Emily Wilson, tying the game 2-2
  • A groundball from Sofia Sabatini off a shot attempt from the Camels allowed Christina Warren to push the Eagles ahead 3-2, keeping the lead into the end of the first period

SECOND PERIOD
  • Winthrop started the second period with a series of turnovers that allowed Emily Wilson to net her second goal of the game, tying the game back up 3-3
  • Campbell got the 4-3 lead with an unassisted goal from Drew Watkins after a foul on Collins
  • A Deirdre Kelly turnover allowed a successful clear attempt from Campbell and let Hailey Kohlmann tack onto the Camels' lead, 5-3
  • The game remained 5-3 until an unassisted goal by Chloe Annibell increased the Camels' lead 6-3
  • Campbell went on to score two more goals to push their lead by five going into the half, 8-3
  • Winthrop was unable to net a goal in the second period

THIRD PERIOD
  • Campbell earned the first draw control of the period by Bridget Ahlgren
  • Both teams struggled to get on the board, with the Eagles and Camels both making multiple turnovers
  • Winthrop's first goal of eight in the third was made at the 13:18 mark by Emily Hollinger, bringing it to 8-4
  • Multiple goals by Mollie Calabrese, Iannotti, and Warren in the third period helped the Eagles cut deeply into the Camels' lead, making it a tied 11-11 game at the end of the third
  • Winthrop held Campbell to only two goals in the third period

FOURTH PERIOD
  • The fourth period was neck and neck between the Eagles and the Camels
  • Campbell broke the tie at 13:53 with an unassisted goal by Hanna Russell, making it a 12-11 game
  • A goal from Iris Leavitt brought the game back 12-12, but Campbell quickly bounced back with an unassisted goal from Emma Jankowiak, making it 13-12
  • Gabby Pierpont netted two goals back-to-back to push Winthrop's lead 14-13
  • Another goal from Leavitt increased Winthrop's lead to 15-13
  • Campbell fought back, with a trio of goals from Emily Wilson, McKenna Duncan, and Annibell ultimately led to the Eagles' first loss of the season
