HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ethan Wilson drew a two-out walk in the second, stole second base and scored on a Grant McGuire RBI single to left center to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead
- Colin Crowley followed with a single up the middle to put runners at the corners, but Chazz Grossington struck out looking to strand the pair
- NC State answered with two unearned runs in the bottom half after a Crowley throwing error put Brayden Fraasman on to start the frame; Luke Nixon doubled to put runners on second and third before Mikey Ryan singled home Fraasman and Drew Lanphere brought in Nixon on a sacrifice fly to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 edge
- Winthrop reclaimed the lead with a two-run third as Gabe Natividad was hit by a pitch and Josh Skowronski ripped a double down the right field line to set up runners at second and third
- Cade Norton drove in Natividad with a sacrifice fly to shallow right to tie it at 2-2 before Wilson lined an RBI single to right field to score Skowronski and put the Eagles ahead, 3-2
- Jaylen Hernandez doubled to right to keep the rally going, but McGuire struck out to leave two in scoring position
- Head evened the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to deep right field
- The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on a Nixon fielding error, a walk and a Natividad sacrifice bunt, but freshman lefty Luke Hemric entered and struck out Norton and Alan Benhardt back-to-back to escape the jam unscathed
- Mason Tompkins worked 3.1 innings in the start, allowing three runs, just one earned, on three hits with two walks and a strikeout before giving way to the bullpen
- Walker Brodt inherited two runners in the fourth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam when Norton threw out Fraasman at home on a fielder's choice
- NC State broke the 3-3 tie in the sixth when Nixon singled, stole second, advanced on a balk and scored on a Lanphere two-run blast to deep right field (383 feet) to put the Wolfpack ahead 5-3
- Carson Everrette and Shane Keup combined for 1.1 scoreless innings through the seventh before NC State added insurance in the eighth
- Fraasman launched a solo homer to left (396 feet) to lead off the eighth, and Lanphere followed with an RBI double to right center to cap the scoring at 7-3
- Natividad singled to open the ninth, but lefty Cooper Consiglio struck out two of the final three Winthrop batters to close the door
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Skowronski reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored, to lead the Winthrop offense and raise his on-base percentage to .524 through four games
- Lanphere paced NC State with a 2-for-2 day at the plate, homering, doubling and driving in four of the Wolfpack's seven runs while also drawing a walk and hitting a sacrifice fly
- Winthrop left 10 runners on base and went 0-for-2 with the bases loaded, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the fourth-inning threat
- Ben Rehkow took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief, including Lanphere's go-ahead homer in the sixth
- Anderson Nance earned the win for the Wolfpack with 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit relief, striking out two while keeping Winthrop off the scoreboard through the sixth and seventh
