ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University volleyball team outlasted Charleston Southern in five sets, 3-2, on Friday for the Eagles home conference opener.
Lexi Thatcher delivered 50 assists, while
Paige Bennett tallied 15 kills and
Giselle Little hammered a career-high 16 kills.
Thatcher achieved a season-high of 50 assists while
Teagan Sychterz has recorded at least seven total blocks in two consecutive games.
Winthrop improves to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in Big South play. Charleston Southern falls to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

- The Eagles opened the first set with two Bowen kills from Thatcher and later led 4-2 after a Charleston Southern attack error. Â
- Charleston Southern scored the next five points to move in front 7-4. Â
- Reece Rhoads put down two kills as Winthrop cut the margin to 11-10. Â
- Charleston Southern reached set point at 24-17 and closed the set with a service error to win 25-18.

- Charleston Southern scored the first four points of the second set and pushed its lead to 11-5. Â
- The Eagles clawed back with kills from Sychterz, Bowen, and Little to tie it at 19-19. Â
- Winthrop edged ahead 23-22 on a block by Little and Thatcher. Â
- Rhoads closed the set with consecutive kills from Thatcher for a 25-23 victory.

- Winthrop responded to an opening Charleston Southern ace with a 6-3 lead after Bennett's kill. Â
- Charleston Southern tied it and took a 14-13 lead before scoring seven straight points to push ahead 22-15. Â
- The Eagles cut the margin to 22-19 with a four-point run. Â
- Charleston Southern finished the set 25-20 on an Adeline Wieler ace.
Set 4 Â
- The Eagles built a 9-3 lead with early blocking from Sychterz, Bennett, and Bowen. Â
- Charleston Southern closed to 9-7 but Winthrop pulled away to 20-12 with kills from Bennett, Rhoads, Bowen, and Little. Â
- The Eagles closed the set 25-18 on kills by Bennett and Rhoads.
Set 5 Â
- The Eagles trailed 2-1 early but surged ahead with a Bennett block and a Little kill. Â
- Charleston Southern tied the set at 6-6, but Winthrop pulled ahead 8-6 on a Rhoads kill. Â
- Bennett delivered another kill for set point, and an attack error by Charleston Southern sealed the 15-10 win.
