Eagles Fall to Hot-Shooting Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood used a barrage of three-pointers and capitalized on turnovers to pull away in the second half, handing Winthrop a 100-79 loss Wednesday night at the Joan Perry Brock Center. Amourie Porter led the Eagles with 21 points, while Longwood knocked down 15 threes and scored 26 points off turnovers. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Winthrop came out the gates fast as Madison Ruff opened the scoring with a layup to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead. 
  • Tocarra Johnson followed with an offensive rebound and putback at 8:25, pushing Winthrop in front 6-4. 
  • Longwood answered inside through Frances Ulysse, keeping the game tight early as neither team could string together a run. 
  • Cori Lard knocked down a three at 5:45, extending the Eagles lead to 13-8. 
  • Winthrop stretched it to double figures after a Pierfax fast-break layup at 3:17 made it 20-10, forcing a Longwood timeout. 
  • Longwood closed the quarter with a late three, but Winthrop still carried a 26-21 lead after one. 

SECOND QUARTER 
  • Winthrop briefly pushed the margin to seven when Johnson finished inside at 8:01 to make it 28-21. 
  • Longwood responded from the perimeter, with Jasmine Peaks and Jaci Bolden hitting threes to swing momentum back toward the Lancers. 
  • Porter drilled a three at 5:33 to put Winthrop back on top 33-31 as the teams traded leads. 
  • Longwood prowess from deep began to show, with Malea Brown knocking down a three at 4:25. 
  • Ryiah Wilson answered with a three of her own at 2:36, keeping Winthrop within striking distance during a back-and-forth stretch. 
  • A late Longwood triple with 22 seconds left gave the Lancers a 45-44 edge at halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER 
  • Winthrop tied the game early as Mya Pierfax hit both at the line at 9:38, briefly putting the Eagles in front 46-45. 
  • Johnson continued to battle on the glass, scoring a tip-in at 8:55 to keep Winthrop close at 48-47. 
  • Longwood began to separate with transition baskets and perimeter shooting, taking a 54-50 lead midway through the quarter. 
  • The Lancers hit consecutive threes during a key stretch, pushing the margin to double-digits at 60-50. 
  • Winthrop struggled to find rhythm offensively as turnovers fueled Longwood's run. 
  • Longwood closed the quarter on top 73-59 after outscoring Winthrop 28-15 in the period. 

FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Winthrop opened the quarter with energy as Wilson finished off an offensive rebound at 9:41, trimming it to 73-61. 
  • Lard connected on a three at 8:55 to cut the deficit to nine, briefly swinging momentum back toward the Eagles. 
  • Longwood answered immediately with a Brown three at 8:22, halting the run and restoring control. 
  • The Lancers continued to pour it on from deep, hitting back-to-back three around the five-minute mark to stretch the lead past 20. 
  • Winthrop continued to attack the paint late behind Porter and Ruff, but the gap never dipped into single digits. 
  • A late Longwood three capped the scoring as the Lancers closed out the 100-79 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Winthrop shot 47.9 percent from the field but committed 25 turnovers, leading to 26 Longwood points. 
  • The Eagles scored 48 points in the paint and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, but were outpaced from beyond the arc. 
  • Longwood shot 50 percent from the floor and 15-for-30 from three-point range. 
  • Porter led Winthrop with 21 points, while Ruff and Lard added 14 apiece. 
  • Longwood was led by Malea Brown's 21 points, with six Lancers scoring in double figures. 
  • Winthrop shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half before cooling to 31.3 percent after halftime.
