Eagles Late Charge Falls Short Against Radford

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team clawed all the way back from a double-digit second-half deficit and had the ball with a chance late, but Radford held on for a 67-65 Big South win Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.  

Cori Lard led the Eagles by tying her career-high with 17 points, and Amourie Porter added a 15 point and ten rebound double-double as Winthrop trimmed a 12-point fourth-quarter gap to two in the final minute. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Radford struck first from deep, with Joi Williams knocking down a three at 9:39 to open a quick 6-0 start. 
  • Winthrop finally broke through when Jada Ryce buried a three, the 50th of her career, at 7:15, getting the Eagles on the board and cutting it to 6-3. 
  • Radford stayed hot from the arc, adding another Williams three to push the margin to 9-3 and keep Winthrop playing from behind. 
  • Mya Pierfax steadied the Eagles with a midrange jumper to make it 9-5, but Radford answered again in transition. 
  • A Radford steal led to an Angelina Nice three at 4:34, stretching the lead to 12-5 during a stretch where Winthrop turnovers piled up. 
  • Cori Lard ended the quarter with a jumper, but Radford took a 14-7 lead after one as Winthrop committed seven first-quarter turnovers. 

SECOND QUARTER 
  • Radford opened the quarter with a layup to extend the lead to 16-7, but Pierfax answered with a pull-up jumper to make it 16-9. 
  • Winthrop's pressure started to flip the game, sparked by Ryiah Wilson's three at 6:28 to cut it to 18-14. 
  • Porter finished at the rim to make it 20-16, then Pierfax hit a fast-break three at 5:12 to pull Winthrop within one, 20-19. 
  • Lard followed with a jumper to give Winthrop its first lead at 21-20, capping a quick swing fueled by steals and runouts. 
  • Pierfax drilled another transition three at 2:48, pushing the Eagles in front 26-22 as Winthrop continued to score off Radford miscues. 
  • Radford closed the half with back-to-back threes, including Ellie Taylor's triple with one second left, to take a 30-28 lead into intermission. 

THIRD QUARTER 
  • Winthrop tied it early when Pierfax finished a layup at 9:18 to make it 30-30, but Radford immediately answered at the rim. 
  • Radford created separation behind Williams, who scored on a fast-break three at 7:47 and a layup at 7:09 to build a 39-31 cushion. 
  • Lard kept Winthrop within range with a three-point play at 6:30, trimming it to 39-34. 
  • Radford's perimeter shooting continued to sting, as Cate Carlson hit a three at 6:13 to push the lead back to 42-34. 
  • Winthrop stayed aggressive defensively, as Wilson and Pierfax sparked steals, but Radford kept answering with timely buckets and free throws. 
  • Jada Ryce hit a late jumper to close the quarter, but Radford carried a 54-48 edge into the fourth. 

FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Porter opened the quarter at the line, knocking down two free throws at 8:53 to cut it to 54-50. 
  • Radford answered with Williams' fast-break three at 7:45, then Cherish Haywood tacked on a bucket and free throw to stretch it to 60-50. 
  • Winthrop chipped away behind Lard, who buried a three at 5:41 to make it 62-55. 
  • Madison Ruff finished a layup at 3:59, cutting the deficit to 62-57 as Winthrop's defense tightened. 
  • After Radford pushed it to eight again, Lard hit another three at 0:44 to pull Winthrop within 65-62. 
  • Winthrop had it down to two on Porter's basket and free throw at 0:23, but Radford came up with the final defensive stops to seal it, 67-65. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 
  • Winthrop shot 39.3 percent from the field in the first half (11-for-28) before improving to 44.8 percent after halftime (13-for-29). 
  • Radford hit 12 threes (12-for-25), including six in the second half, while Winthrop finished six-for-14 from deep. 
  • Winthrop won the turnover battle on the scoreboard: the Eagles scored 21 points off turnovers and came up with 12 steals (Ryiah Wilson had five), while Radford scored ten points off turnovers.
  • Radford controlled the glass, 42–33 and turned 10 offensive rebounds into extra chances. 
  • Lard led Winthrop with 17 points and four assists; Porter posted 15 points, ten rebounds and four assists; Pierfax added 14 points on six-for-14 shooting with zero turnovers in 37 minutes. 
  • Radford was led by Williams' 16 points, four threes, and five assists, while Carlson added 14 points, four threes, as the Highlanders improved to 11-9 overall.
