Volleyball Pushed to Five, Comes Up Short Against Samford

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Winthrop University volleyball team picked up their first loss of the 2025 campaign, falling in five sets to Samford in reverse sweep fashion on Thursday night at the Food City Center. 

Going to five for their third straight game, the Eagles had the two-set advantage on the Bulldogs, sitting within two points of clinching the victory before allowing Samford back into the contest.

Game Recap 

Set 1 

  • Eagles got out to a hot start from the jump, sitting at a 10-4 lead 
  • Winthrop hit at a mark of 0.281, also forcing the Bulldogs to swing a match-low 0.063 
  • Jolley powered the offense, netting six kills in the opening frame 
  • Eagles put the set away after a five-point swing from 17-13 to 22-13, capturing the first stanza 

Set 2 

  • Winthrop played to the same tune as the first half, outhitting their counterparts once again 
  • Eagles sat ahead at 11-3 after a six-point run to start the second set 
  • The Bulldogs evened things up at 16-all, after a thirteen-point swing thanks to some key substitutions 
  • Winthrop commanded the lead back, taking the second set handedly 

Set 3 

  • Despite hitting their best on the night, 0.324, the Eagles surrendered this set to their counterparts 
  • Both squads would go back-and-forth trading the lead to open the third set 
  • Samford was able to jump out to their largest lead, 20-15 
  • After tying things up at 22-22, the Bulldogs took the next three out of four points for their first set of the contest 

Set 4 

  • Samford forced Winthrop into their worst hitting performance of the day, 0.186, while hitting their best, 0.271 
  • Winthrop was able to mount a 17-10 lead after substituting Isabella Murray to run the offense 
  • Kaleigh Meritt would take over for the Bulldogs, leading them to a 12-2 run with a nine-straight point swing in the mix to pin the score at 22-19 Bulldogs 
  • Winthrop would fight back to rattle off the next four points and retake the lead, 23-22 
  • The Bulldogs took the final three points of the set, forcing a fifth stanza 

Set 5 

  • Despite hitting their best on the night, 0.318, the Eagles' offense was not enough to clinch in the deciding set 
  • Both squads would go back and forth until the match sat tied at 11-all 
  • Samford would capture the final four points to secure the victory 

Next Game 
The Eagles are back in the Food City Center tomorrow morning to take on Wofford at 10:00 a.m.
