Women's Soccer Fall 3-2 In Battle With Upstate

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer dropped a hard fought battle 3-2 to USC Upstate, Saturday evening in its Big South Conference opener.

Game Recap
  • Eagles struck first as Mia Silber won the ball on a tackle near midfield, dribbled down the middle of the field and from about 30 yards out fired a shot past the keeper
  • Upstate tied the match in the 32nd minute as Savannah Noll served a ball into the box in front of goal and Riley O'Bryan ran on just beating Sofia Iori to the ball and flicking it past her into the net
  • After a 1-1 score at the break, the Eagles regained the lead in the 53rd minute as Lindsay Sheet had the ball the top of the box, dragged the ball back to her right create space from the defender and fired a shot into the upper left portion of the goal
  • The Spartans answered less than three minutes later as Paige Armstrong ripped a shot on frame that beat Mia Vrataric to the far corner
  • Silber tested Madison Ejgrid in goal again in the 61st minute as Ejgrid was forced to make a full extension save on a shot toward the left corner
  • In the 78th minute, Upstate took the lead as Dara Russon dribbled past Vrataric in a one-on-one and slipped a shot into the open net
  • Winthrop nearly equalized in the 79th minute as Cordelia McIntosh was on the end of a cross near the six yard box and her header on frame was cleared near the goal line by an Upstate player
Notables
  • Upstate had a 14-12 edge in total shots and shots on goal were even at 6-6
  • The goal for Silber was the first of her collegiate career and he second for Sheets
Looking Ahead
Eagles will have a midweek contest as they travel to N. Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to take on Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. It is the first of two straight league games on the road.
