Eagles Cruise Past Catamounts in Straight Sets

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Back home in the comfy confides of the Winthrop Coliseum, the Winthrop University volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep over the Catamounts of Western Carolina on Thursday evening. 

Sophia Matthews surpassed the 500 career digs mark and Avery Jolley tallied her third-straight double-double with a ten kill and ten dig performance.

Game Recap 

Set 1 

  • It was all Eagles in set one, as the Eagles jumped out to a massive 16-4 lead through the first 20 points 
  • Avery Jolley and Teagan Sychterz lifted Winthrop with five and four kills, respectively 
  • Jolley powered the final kill of the set to take the opening frame, 25-14 

Set 2 

  • Set two was a closer one, as the Catamounts kept up with the Eagles throughout the frame 
  • Laila Glover dominated the right with five kills and a key block alongside Sychterz, while Giselle Little chipped in four kills, including the clincher. 
  • The Eagles were able to mount a 18-12 lead, seeing the Eagle attack turn into another gear
  • With the Eagles hitting their best on the night 0.441, they captured the second set 25-21 

Set 3 

  • After an early Catamounts ace, Winthrop answered with a Little kill and then seized control with a McCollum ace, followed by a sustained run of kills and blocks to see the score sit at 17-9 
  • The Eagles' front line took over, Glover and Sychterz teamed for a roof, Little and Glover formed another block, and Jolley added a solo stuff as the lead ballooned. 
  • Down the stretch, Bennett dropped an ace, Maeve Rehmann scored on a quick for set point, and McCollum finished the sweep with a kill.
