Men's Soccer Falls At South Carolina Tuesday Night

Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer fell 5-1 on the road at South Carolina, Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

Game Recap
  • Gamecocks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Ethan Ballak struck first in the 6th minute
  • Ballak found himself free in the box and went right at Jack Kilstrom and slipped a shot into the goal for the lead
  • Ballak ripped a shot in the 10th minute that was turned away by Kilstrom by the rebound came right to Tyler Trimnal running on and he slotted it into the open net
  • Gamecocks grabbed a 3-0 lead before the half as Ballak dribbled to the middle of he field and ripped a left-footed shot from about 25 yards out into the right corner
  • Winthrop looked to try and get one back early in the second half as it earned a corner off an Emory Crichlow shot at the edge of the box was deflected over the line by a South Carolina player
  • Off the corner the serviced came right in front of goal as Dragen Vrataric got his head on it but the shot pinged off the crossbar and was cleared away
  • South Carolina took a 4-0 lead in the 69th minute as Samy Kolby dribbled around the box and played a short pass back to Matthew DeJianne who's low shot through traffic found its way past a diving Kilstrom
  • Eagles were on the board in the 76th minute as Dragen Vrataric sent a service into the box that was run on to by Ethan Marks but Marks missed the ball and the service curled into the right corner of the goal

Notables
  • Gamecocks finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots (8-1 in shots on goal)
  • Eagles finished with a 2-1 edge in corners and fouls were 12-9 in favor of Winthrop
  • Diego Candia made his 34th consecutive start for the Eagles

Next Game
Eagles are back home on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. when they host Wofford College. There will be a pregame ceremony to recognize the 2025 men's soccer senior class.
