Clemson, S.C. – Winthrop softball battled nationally-ranked Clemson on the road in a 4-1 loss, Wednesday evening at McWhorter Stadium.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Tigers struck in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases and Alex Brown came home from third on a ground out to first base
- Clemson still had runners at second and third after the play but Megan Powell struck out the next batter to end the inning
- Tigers doubled their lead at 2-0 in the bottom of the second
- Kylee Johnson led off with a single and moved to second on an errant throw to first on the play
- Johnson eventually came around to score on a ground out to second by Brown
- Eagles broke up Macey Cintron's no-hit and shutout bid in the sixth as Emma Roberson singled through the left side with one out
- Roberson then stole second and moved to third on a fly ball to right by Emma Jackson
- Emmy Cardenas, who came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth, stood in and delivered a single to right center to plate Roberson to cut the deficit in half at 2-1
- Tia Beckham put a good bat on the ball but her shot to right was at the outfielder to end the threat
- Tigers added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a Julia Knowler RBI double
EXTRA BASES
- Beckham's streak of reaching base came to an end at nine, a season-best by an Eagle
- Cardenas' single in the sixth was her first RBI of the season
ON DECK
Winthrop is off until next week when it welcomes Wofford College to Terry Field on Tuesday, Apr. 15 at 6 p.m.
