McGuire Earns 500th Career NCAA Coaching Win; Eagles Take Series Opener At Longwood

Farmville, Va. – Eagle head coach Mike McGuire earned his 500th career NCAA coaching victory in the series opener at Longwood Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Chronis's RBI double down the left field line with two outs drove in two runs in the top of the first
  • Eagles put runners on second and third via a wild pitch but a strikeout on the next play ended the second inning
  • Winthrop doubled their score in the fifth on an RBI double by Kropf and an RBI single by Alan Benhardt on consecutive plays with one out
  • Two innings later Winthrop again put runners on second and third but a lineout ended the threat
  • The Lancers got on the board in that inning on Yeatt's fielder's choice and ended the shutout bid
  • The visitors from Rock Hill attempted to get an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a runner on third with two outs but the Eagles were caught attempting to steal home on the next play
  • Longwood cut it to 4-2 in their half of the inning on Urbaniak's RBI single up the middle with one out
  • But Winthrop put the Lancers away by scoring four runs in the ninth
TEAM TIDBITS
  • Winthrop moves to 1,404-1,021-7 all-time as a program
  • Winthrop moves to 492-373 all-time in conference play
  • Longwood never threatened until the bottom of the seventh inning as Wilson pitched 6.1 innings of scoreless ball
