Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop saw a furious late comeback fall just short to conference-leading Mercer at home Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop led 3-2 nearly four minutes in
- Mercer answered with eight of the next 10 goals to take a 10-5 lead at the break
- The Bears eventually seized their largest lead of the game at 12-6 with 6:46 left in the third quarter
- But the Eagles began to fight back and nearly tied it up at the end
- Winthrop cut the lead to one on four separate occasions, the last with 56 seconds to go but couldn't complete the comeback
