Boiling Springs, N.C. – Balanced scoring led Winthrop to a victory at Gardner-Webb Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gardner-Webb scored first at the 9:30 mark of the opening quarter
- Christina Warren scored on a free position attempt to tie it up at 1-1 a minute later
- The Runnin' Bulldogs broke the tie with less than seven minutes to go in the first quarter
- Emily Hollinger then made it 2-2 just before the end of the frame
- Gabby Pierpont gave Winthrop their first lead of the day off a rebound on a free position attempt at the 11:32 mark of the second quarter
- Back-to-back goals in an 18-second span by Hollinger and Scarlet Cifarelli put the Eagles up by three with eight minutes left in the half
- At the 8:48 mark of the second quarter and Winthrop up 3-2 at that point, Eagle goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay reached 100 career saves
- Pierpont then scored at the 6:05 mark of the second stanza, giving the Eagles a 6-2 lead and led by that score at the break
- After a great second quarter, the visitors picked up right where they left off to start the second half as Warren scored to make it a five-point lead at the 14:09 mark of the third quarter
- Warren then got a hat trick on a man-up, free position shot to make it 8-2 with 11:44 to go in the third
- Gardner-Webb scored with six minutes left in the third to make it a five-point deficit again only to have Madison Mayer take it back up to six three minutes later
- Jane Tattersall's goal on the man-up with a minute left in the stanza gave Winthrop a 10-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes
- The Runnin' Bulldogs cut it to four at 10-6 with 5:17 left in the contest but neither team scored again after that
