Scarlet Cifarelli and
Gabby Pierpont combined for nine goals as the Eagles broke a late 9-9 tie and won their first game of the season vs. Farleigh Dickinson at home Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Madison Mayer put the Eagles on the board first at the 12:37 mark of the first quarter
- FDU answered with two straight goals
- Pierpont knotted the score with four minutes left in the frame and Emily Hollinger put Winthrop back in the lead nearly two minutes later on a man-up, free position attempt
- The visitors tied it up with nearly a minute to go in the quarter
- Cifarelli's tally gave Winthrop a 4-3 lead at the 13:39 mark in the second quarter only to have FDU tie it at 4-4 seconds later
- FDU took a 5-4 edge with 9:29 left in the stanza but three minutes later Christina Warren scored her first collegiate goal
- Cifarelli's second goal of the game broke the deadlock with two minutes left in the half
- The score would hold for Winthrop going into the locker room
- FDU scored the first two goals of the second half to go up by one at 7-6 at the 12:40 mark of the third quarter
- Pierpont scored her second of the day to tie it at seven with six minutes remaining in the third quarter but FDU went back out in front on their next possession
- FDU led 8-7 at the end of three
- Cifarelli got the hat trick two minutes into the fourth quarter to make it 8-8 and then gave Winthrop the lead, 9-8 with 10:06 to play
- The visitors tied it again with 8:46 remaining but Cifarelli's fifth and sixth goals of the game put the Eagles ahead for good 11-9 three minutes later
- Pierpont notched a hat trick of her own, putting the Eagles up by three and sealing the deal with 2:53 left
