Christina Warren and
Madison Mayer led the Eagles with a combined 11 goals as Winthrop rallied from a 16-9 third quarter deficit to defeat Merrimack at home in overtime 18-17 Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first 10 minutes of the contest, the score was tied 3-3
- Merrimack scored the next three goals to break the tie and lead 6-3 at the end of the first quarter
- After a goal by the visitors to start the second quarter, Warren and Tori Iannotti scored two quick goals to cut it to two at the 12:33 mark
- Merrimack then outscored Winthrop 6-2 for the rest of the quarter to take a 13-7 lead at halftime
- The Warriors eventually extended their lead to 16-9 with 6:19 remaining in the third stanza before Winthrop began their massive comeback
- The homestanding Eagles would score eight of the next nine goals (including five straight) to tie the score at 17, with Warren scoring four of them
- Two of her four goals in the fourth quarter occurred on the man-up
- Warren's fourth of the frame tied it with 58 seconds left and the game would go to overtime
- Mayer capped off the comeback by scoring with 48 seconds left in overtime

- Eagles are now 104-111 all-time as a program
- Eagles are 52-43 all-time at home
- This was the first overtime game for Winthrop since a 13-12 double overtime loss at High Point on Mar. 29, 2023
