Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split on the opening day of the Winthrop Eagle Classic as it earned a 16-0 win over Norfolk State and fell 4-1 to Western Carolina.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Norfolk St.
- Emma Jackson led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field
- Megan Powell followed with a home run to right field for an early 2-0 lead
- Two batters later after a Peyton Bryden single, Katie Beck homered to right center off the scoreboard to lead 4-0
- Eagles kept pouring it on Mili Watts singled, stole second and then scored on a double by Grayson Buckner down the left field line
- Eagles then loaded the bases and Powell drew a walk to plate another run for a 6-0 lead
- Bryden followed with a double to left center, scoring Tabitha Perry and Jackson
- Leading 10-0, Tia Beckham hit the team's fourth home run of the inning with a two-run shot to center for a 12-run first
- Winthrop added four more runs in the fourth inning behind an RBI double from Jackson to right center and a three-run home run to left by Beck
vs. Western Carolina
- Catamounts took the lead in the top of the third as Maya McPherson hit a two-run home run to left
- In the top of the fifth the Catamounts doubled their lead courtesy of a two-run homer to right field
- In the bottom of the fifth the Eagles got on the board as Madelyn Miller led off with a double down the left field line and two batters later came around to score on a single to left by Jackson
- In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles got the tying run to the plate, but were unable to rally
- Watts led off with a single to first base and two batters later Powell drew a walk but were left stranded
EXTRA BASES
- Beck homered twice in the game against Norfolk State, her second game this season with two home runs
- Eagles scored 12 runs in the first inning, the most runs in an inning since the Eagles pushed 12 across in the first inning of a 19-0 win over East Carolina on Mar. 3, 2019
- Beck also had five RBI in the game, her second game with five RBI this season
- Powell tossed a one-hit shutout against Norfolk State as the only hit came with two outs in the top of the fifth on a loop single over first base that just squeezed inside the line
- Powell struck out 10 batters against Norfolk State with the last one giving her 500 for her collegiate career

Winthrop is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 8 for the second day of the Winthrop Eagle Classic and will face Queens at 3 p.m. and Boston at 5:30 p.m.
