Softball Drops Doubleheader With Charleston Southern

Beck Tied Freshman Record For Home Runs In A Season With Her 8th

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball dropped a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Charleston Southern with losses of 6-5 and 9-0.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Eagles were on the board in the bottom of the first as Katie Beck hit a two-run home run to right center for the early lead
  • Bucs took advantage of an Eagle fielding miscue and cut the Winthrop lead in half in the top of the third
  • The error put Cadence Walding on second base and after moving over on a one out ground out, she came around to score on a single to left center by Carsten Sandvig
  • In the bottom of the fourth the Eagles looked to add to their lead as three walks loaded the bases with one out
  • Megan Powell grounded to third as the throw came home for the force out and the catcher's toss to first just beat Powell to the bag for a double play
  • Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Tia Beckham hit a three-run home run to center for a 5-1 lead
  • Buc answered the Eagles in the top of the sixth as Charlee Yourman delivered a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 5-3 Winthrop lead
  • Then two batters later Walding singled up the middle, scoring Linley Jones but Emma Villaescusa tried to score as well but she was thrown out at the plate by Emma Jackson to preserve the lead
  • In the top of the seventh, Sandvig singled with one out and then scored from first on a double down the left field line by Harper Schoenweis to tie the game at 5-5
  • Schoenweis then moved to third on an error and scored on a slow rolling single to shortstop for a 6-5 lead as Blakely Kingsmore beat the throw to first
Game 2
  • Eagles had their first runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth inning as Beck singled with one out and then two batters later moved to second when Grayson Buckner drew a walk but was stranded
  • A six run fifth inning put the Bucs in the lead, highlighted by a grand slam from Payton Smith
EXTRA BASES
  • Beck's home run in the first inning of game one gave her eight for the season, which ties the freshman record with Maddie Antone set in 2014
  • Beck extended her hitting streak to a collegiate-best seven games with a single in the second game and the home run in the first game
  • Both Beckham and Beck are now one home run shy of cracking the single-season Top 10
ON DECK
Winthrop steps away from league play for a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 1 as it heads to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College at 6 p.m.
