Eagles Fall In 11 Innings At Wofford Tuesday Night

Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop softball suffered a 3-2 loss in 11 innings at Wofford College, Tuesday evening at Hope Field.

RECORD: Winthrop (22-15, 6-3 Big South) | Wofford College (20-14, 2-4 Southern)

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Megan Powell put the Eagles up in the top of the first with a one out home run
  • In the top of the second, the Eagles drew three straight walks to load the bases but were left stranded
  • In the top of the third and one out, Tia Beckham doubled to right center and Peyton Bryden raced around from first base to score for a 2-0 lead
  • In the top of the sixth, Wofford's Rivers Sampson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Brianna Stanley followed with an infield single
  • Pinch-runner Desirae Devine and Stanley pulled off a double steal to get both runners in scoring position with no outs
  • Abby Gossett delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2
  • Lonna Addison got an inning-ending double play to keep the game tied
  • In the top of the ninth, pinch-runner Carli Pearson was placed on second to start things off
  • Emma Roberson sacrificed Pearson to third base
  • Emma Jackson stepped in and hit a grounder to the pitcher who threw to first and then a throw came home to get Pearson trying to score for a double play
  • Terriers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Powell was able to get a fly out to end the inning
  • Stanley was placed on second to start the bottom of the 11th and moved to third on a sacrifice
  • Two batters later H. Maddox singled to right field to plate Stanley for the win
EXTRA BASES
  • Powell's home run in the first inning was the 35th of her collegiate career and 14th as an Eagle
  • Beckham extended her hitting streak to five games and has now reached base safely in six straight
  • This was the fourth extra inning game of the season for Winthrop, which is now 3-1 in those contests
ON DECK
Winthrop gets back to Big South Conference action Apr. 4-5 as it heads right back to Spartanburg to take on USC Upstate. The series begins with a single-game on Friday, Apr. 4 at 3 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, Apr. 5 with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
