Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a loss to California last Sunday, Winthrop opens Big South play vs. Radford at home on Wednesday, Mar. 26. The contest is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
A LOOK AT RADFORD
- This is the 10th meeting between the two schools, with Winthrop leading the series, 6-3
- Radford has won the last two meetings and three of the last four meetings in the series
- The first meeting was on Mar. 26, 2016 with the Eagles winning 26-5 in Radford on the way to winning the first five meetings
- Winthrop's last win in the series was on Apr. 9, 2022 in Rock Hill by a 13-10 count
- The two teams met last season on Mar. 30, 2024 in Radford with the Highlanders winning 11-8
- Radford went 6-11 and 3-5 in the Big South last season
- In their most recent game, Radford hung close with Akron before falling late in the eventual 18-10 final led by Mady Cheney's second straight game with five goals
- Cheney's five goals led Radford's offensive efforts and was her third game with 3+ goals this season
- Ava LaManna recorded 16 saves in the net for Radford, her second highest total this season
- Radford conceded just two free position attempts in the game while drawing eight of their own
- Evie Gee also finished with a hat trick, her second 3+ goal performance this season
- The Highlanders were predicted to finish fifth overall in the Big South preseason poll. Along with the poll, the preseason all-conference team was announced that saw Cheney receive recognition in the awards
- Cheney earned second-team all-conference honors in her sophomore season with the Highlanders. Cheney also went on to record 35 goals that included six hat tricks. The Georgetown, Texas native also led the Highlanders in draw controls for the 2024 season having 51 to her name
LAST TIME OUT
- Tori Iannotti and Christina Warren each recorded hat tricks in a loss to California at home Sunday afternoon
- Winthrop dominated in draw controls, 22-8
- This was the final non-conference game of the season for the Eagles
- Five different Eagles scored a goal
- Warren had five shots on goal, which led the team
- Pierpoint led the Eagles with 10 draw controls
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 2-13 (2-6 Big South) record in 2024
- Eagles are ranked seventh in the Big South preseason poll and are in their first season under interim head coach Hannah Potter
- Potter is Winthrop's fourth head coach in program history
- Eagles welcome 12 newcomers to the squad and assistant coach Jordan Bowers
- Eagles also return 18 players, seven of whom played in all 15 contests last season
- Junior Scarlet Cifarelli is the only returnee who finished in the Top 5 in goals scored last season with 13
- She also led the Eagles in assists last season with 20 and was second on the team in points with 33 and fifth in shots on goal with 18
- Emma Calhoun, Lily Davis, Gabby Pierpont and Madison Mayer were all in the Top 5 in ground balls in 2024
- Mayer also led the team in caused turnovers with 13 and draw controls with 67, resulting in her being named Honorable Mention by the Big South Conference
- Davis and Grace Herrero were close behind in the Top 5 in draw controls with 11 and eight, respectively
- Calhoun, Tori Iannotti, Chloe Patterson and Pierpont were one of six players representing the program on the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team
- With the selection of these six, they were the first ever academic all-district selections in lacrosse for the Eagles
- Eagles recorded their most man-up goals in school history as a team with six vs. Stonehill on Mar. 6, 2024
- Eagles also recorded the most man-up goals in school history over a season as a team last year with 24
- Eagles are 104-113 all-time as a program
- Eagles are 52-44 all-time at home
- Eagles are 44-37 all-time in Big South play
- Three school records were tied against Merrimack on Mar. 15, 2025
- Warren tied for first in program history for most man-up goals by an individual in a single game with three
- She also tied for first in program history for most free-position goals by an individual in a single game with four
- Eagles as a team tied for first in program history for most free-position goals in a single game with nine
- Winthrop is looking to win the Big South opener for the second straight season
- In the conference opener last year, Winthrop beat Gardner-Webb in Rock Hill 13-8 on Mar. 27, 2024
SEASON HONORS
- Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 18
- In her first career start, Warren scored a game-high seven goals to lead Winthrop to an 18-17 comeback win over Merrimack
- She converted all four free-position attempts and added one ground ball and one caused turnover
- Warren scored twice in the first half, added another in the third quarter, and netted four in the fourth, including the game-tying goal with 58 seconds remaining to force overtime
- She scored on seven of her 10 shots, nine of which went on target
- Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 25
- Warren totaled 10 points on nine goals and one assist across two games for Winthrop
- She led the team with six goals and an assist at Old Dominion, including a first-quarter hat trick and two fourth-quarter goals
- On Sunday against California, she added another hat trick, scoring twice in a 26-second span in the second quarter and again late in the third to pull the Eagles within two
- She finished the week with a .529 shot percentage and recorded two draw controls
CAREER LEADERS
- Scarlet Cifarelli is three assists away from moving into seventh all-time in school history (currently has 45) and is five assists away from 50 in her career
- Cifarelli is also 12 points away from 100 in her career (currently has 88)
- She is seven goals away from 50 in her career (currently has 43) and now has 80 shots and 67 shots on goal in her career
- Gabby Pierpont now has 60 draw controls in her career
- Pierpont is also a man-down goal away from moving into a tie for third in school history
- Madison Mayer is eight draw controls away from 100 in her career (currently has 92)
- She has moved into 10th in school history in this category
- Iannotti has now gone over 50 draw controls in her career (currently has 62)
- Emma Calhoun now has 212 saves in her career
- This is good for fourth in school history in saves
