Eagles Fall To St. John's In Extra Innings Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop dropped a 10-inning battle in the second game of a three-game series with St. John's Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck first in the bottom of the second on Vela's RBI single down the left field line with two outs, driving in Nate Chronis
  • The Red Storm took a 2-1 in the top of the third on Cowan's sac fly to right field and Britt's RBI single, both with two outs
  • In the bottom of the frame, Winthrop scored six runs to take a 7-2 lead
  • The visitors got within two in the fourth on Tucker's RBI single to center field with one out and Cowan's two-run RBI single to center field with two outs
  • Winthrop answered right back in the bottom of the inning on Skowronski's two-run RBI single to right center field with two outs, making the score 9-5 in favor of the Eagles
  • The Eagles then extended their lead to seven in the next stanza as St. John's walked in a run with the bases loaded on three consecutive plays
  • The visitors scored nine straight runs to go up 14-12 in the top of the sixth
  • Alan Benhardt's RBI single to center field scored Vela with one out in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to one
  • Cowan doubled to right center field with two outs to score Raifstanger to restore the two-run lead for the visitors in the eighth
  • But their lead wouldn't last long as Hernandez's two-run RBI double tied the score at 15-15 in the bottom of the eighth
  • The game would go to extras
  • St. John's scored five in the top of the 10th to take a 20-15 lead
  • Winthrop could not answer in their half of the frame
