Eagles Defeat College Of Charleston For 5th Straight Win

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Winthrop softball captured its fifth straight win after a 4-2 road victory at the College of Charleston, Tuesday evening.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck first, grabbing the lead in the top of the second
  • It started with a leadoff walk by Tia Beckham followed by a double to left center by Grayson Buckner
  • Ashlyn Bunn walked to load the bases with no outs
  • Two batters later, Mili Watts brough Beckham home with a sacrifice fly to center
  • In the top of the third Peyton Bryden led off with a single and three batters later Buckner stepped in and hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field for a 3-0 lead
  • Eagles added another two-out run in the top of the fourth as Watts stole second with one out and came home on a Megan Powell single down the line at third to lead 4-0
  • Cougars got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth with one out on a single by Kaytlin Stacey
  • Two batters later Kennedy Rhue singled down the left field line to put runners at first and second but the threat ended with a ground out to Lonna Addison
  • Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Jay Wrightsman drew a leadoff walk and stole second
  • Two batters later Hyatt singled to score Wrightsman from third
  • Cougars cut the Winthrop lead in half as Karly Smith followed with an RBI single
EXTRA BASES
  • With the Buckner home run the Eagles now have 29 on the year, moving them into a tie for 10th all-time for a single-season for the program
  • Bryden's single in the third extended her hitting streak to five games
  • Tabitha Perry reached base for the seventh straight game, one away from tying the longest streak by any Eagle this season
ON DECK
Winthrop gets back to Big South Conference action Mar. 21-22 as it heads to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb. The series begins with a single-game on Friday, Mar. 21 at 4 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, Mar. 22 with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
