Eagles Down Gardner-Webb For 6th Straight Win

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop extended its winning streak to six straight after opening its weekend road series with Gardner-Webb by earning a 9-2 victory, Friday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck first as Peyton Bryden doubled to right center with two outs
  • Katie Beck followed by taking a 1-0 pitch to left center for a single that plated Bryden from second base
  • Runnin' Bulldogs evened it up in the bottom of the second as Ella Christopher reached on an error to start the inning
  • Two batters later Annicka McLaughlin singled with a lined shot off the glove of Bryden at third to put runners at the corners
  • Maura Pendleton stepped in and singled up the middle on the first pitch to score Christopher from third
  • Winthrop answered right back as Emma Jackson drew a leadoff walk to start the third and Megan Powell followed by smashing a home run to left center for a 3-1 lead
  • Gardner-Webb made it a one run game in the bottom of the fourth as Christopher led off with a double to left center followed by a single to soft single to left to put runners at the corners
  • Powell struck out the next batter but McLaughlin singled on a high chopper to third to score Christopher
  • Powell retired the next two batters to keep the lead
  • Beck walked with one out in the top of the fifth and stole second to get into scoring position
  • Tia Beckham came through with her second double of the game, a shot down the left field line to score Beck for a two run advantage
  • Eagles weren't done as two batters later Madelyn Miller singled to center to score Beckham for a 5-2 lead
  • Eagles finished the top half with a 6-2 lead after Tabitha Perry hit a shot down the line into left field that the left fielder couldn't haul in off the glove and Miller scored
  • The offense continue to roll in the top of the sixth, adding three more runs highlighted by a two-run triple from Beckham

EXTRA BASES
  • Beckham had four hits on the day, the first by an Eagle since KaDedra Temple on Apr. 30, 2024 vs. the College of Charleston (4-for-4)
  • It is also just the fourth time an Eagle has had four hits in a game over the last six seasons

  • Winthrop started Big South play 4-0 for the first time since 2022 and just the second time since 2009
  • Powell earned 10th win in the circle this season, which are the most in a season with the Eagles and third time in her career with 10 or more
  • It was also the 47th win of her collegiate career as she approaches 50
  • The Eagles reached 20 wins in 30 games, the fastest to 20 victories by an Eagle team since the 2007 squad did it in 29 games
  • Bryden extended her hitting streak to six games while Powell has now hit safely in five straight
  • Perry reached base for the eighth straight game, which ties for a season-best by any Eagle
  • The winning streak is the longest since the 2015 team won six straight
