Eagles Go For Third Straight Win At Old Dominion Wednesday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off downing Merrimack 18-17 in overtime last weekend after a big second half rally, Winthrop seeks their third straight win at Old Dominion on Wed., Mar. 18. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

A LOOK AT OLD DOMINION
  • This is the third meeting between the two schools, with ODU leading the series 2-0
  • The first meeting was on Feb. 23, 2019 in Norfolk, Va., with the Monarchs winning 11-10
  • The two teams met the next season on Feb. 15, 2020 in Rock Hill, with ODU again winning 17-15 in the most recent meeting to date
  • Old Dominion (7-3) is coming off a 15-9 win over Charlotte last weekend. This marks the first American Athletic Conference win for the Monarchs since 2021, including Head Coach Theresa Walton's first conference win at ODU
  • Against the 49ers, Sydney Taylor recorded her 100th career point on top of two goals, while Alex Kulinski and Ella Bowen each had a hat trick. Sarah Murrell also led the team in ground balls with seven while Goalie Brynn Bowen accounted for 11 saves
  • The Monarchs are currently 7-3
  • ODU went 3-13 last year and were picked to finish eighth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll
  • The Monarchs entered the season with 21 returners and 17 newcomers, including five transfers
  • Taylor was named to the AAC preseason all-conference team
LAST TIME OUT
  • Christina Warren and Madison Mayer led the Eagles with a combined 11 goals as Winthrop rallied from a 16-9 third quarter deficit to defeat Merrimack at home in overtime 18-17 Saturday afternoon
  • This was the first overtime game for Winthrop since a 13-12 double overtime loss at High Point on Mar. 29, 2023
  • This was the first win for the Eagles in overtime since defeating Butler 10-9 in triple overtime on the neutral site of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. on Mar. 19, 2023
  • Winthrop moves to 4-7 all-time in overtime
  • Warren tied for scoring the most man-up goals by an individual in a game in school history with three
  • She also tied for scoring the most free-position goals by an individual in a game in school history with four
  • Eagles also as a team tied for scoring the most free-position goals in a game in school history with nine
  • Seven different Eagles scored a goal
  • Warren led the team in goals and points with seven and shots on goal with nine
  • The two teams were even in draw controls, 19-19
  • Eagles have equaled their win total from last year
  • Eagles last won consecutive games in 2022
  • The Warriors eventually extended their lead to 16-9 with 6:19 remaining in the third stanza before Winthrop began their massive comeback
  • The homestanding Eagles would score eight of the next nine goals (including five straight) to tie the score at 17, with Warren scoring four of them
  • Two of her four goals in the fourth quarter occurred on the man-up
  • Warren's fourth of the frame tied it with 58 seconds left and the game would go to overtime
  • Mayer capped off the comeback by scoring with 48 seconds left in overtime
     
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 2-13 (2-6 Big South) record in 2024
  • Eagles are ranked seventh in the Big South preseason poll and are in their first season under interim head coach Hannah Potter
  • Potter is Winthrop's fourth head coach in program history
  • Eagles welcome 12 newcomers to the squad and assistant coach Jordan Bowers
  • Eagles also return 18 players, seven of whom played in all 15 contests last season
  • Junior Scarlet Cifarelli is the only returnee who finished in the Top 5 in goals scored last season with 13
  • She also led the Eagles in assists last season with 20 and was second on the team in points with 33 and fifth in shots on goal with 18
  • Emma Calhoun, Lily Davis, Gabby Pierpont and Madison Mayer were all in the Top 5 in ground balls in 2024
  • Mayer also led the team in caused turnovers with 13 and draw controls with 67, resulting in her being named Honorable Mention by the Big South Conference
  • Davis and Grace Herrero were close behind in the Top 5 in draw controls with 11 and eight, respectively
  • Calhoun, Tori Iannotti, Chloe Patterson and Pierpont were one of six players representing the program on the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team
  • With the selection of these six, they were the first ever academic all-district selections in lacrosse for the Eagles
  • Eagles recorded their most man-up goals in school history as a team with six vs. Stonehill on Mar. 6, 2024
  • Eagles also recorded the most man-up goals in school history over a season as a team last year with 24
  • Eagles are 104-111 all-time as a program
  • Eagles are 52-43 all-time at home
  • Eagles are 44-37 all-time in Big South play
SEASON HONORS
  • Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week
    • In her first career start, Warren scored a game-high seven goals to lead Winthrop to an 18-17 comeback win over Merrimack
    • She converted all four free-position attempts and added one ground ball and one caused turnover
    • Warren scored twice in the first half, added another in the third quarter, and netted four in the fourth, including the game-tying goal with 58 seconds remaining to force overtime
    • She scored on seven of her 10 shots, nine of which went on target
CAREER LEADERS
  • Scarlet Cifarelli is four assists away from moving into seventh all-time in school history (currently has 44) and is six assists away from 50 in her career
  • Cifarelli is also 14 points away from 100 in her career (currently has 86)
  • She is eight goals away from 50 in her career (currently has 42) and now has 63 shots on goal in her career
  • Gabby Pierpont is three draw controls away from 50 in her career (currently has 47)
  • Pierpont is also a man-down goal away from moving into a tie for third in school history
  • Mayer is 14 draw controls away from 100 in her career (currently has 86)
  • She has moved into 10th in school history in this category
  • Iannotti has now gone over 50 draw controls in her career (currently has 53)
  • Emma Calhoun now has 207 saves in her career
  • This is good for fourth in school history in saves
  • Calhoun has moved into a tie for 4th in school history in goalie victories
  • Mikaylah Lindsay is eighth in school history in saves (currently has 52) and is four away from moving into seventh in school history on the all-time saves list
  • She would pass teammate Maddy Hodgson, who currently has 55
STATISTICAL LEADERS
  • Winthrop leads the Big South in draw controls per game with 14.50
  • Winthrop is fourth in the Big South in ground balls per game with 17.17
  • Cifarelli is fifth in the conference in assists per game with 1.33 and seventh in points per game with 3.50
  • Lindsay is seventh in the conference in saves per game with 5.83 while Calhoun is 10th with 4.25
  • Mayer is eighth in the conference in draw controls per game with 3.17
  • Cifarelli leads the team in goals with 13, assists with eight, points with 21, shots on goal with 20 and groundballs with 10
  • Mayer leads the team in draw controls with 19
  • Davis leads the team in caused turnovers with five
