Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball earned a 5-3 win and 2-1 win over Longwood in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to sweep its conference-opening series.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, Peyton Bryden drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch but was stranded
- In the top of the third, Avery Drake hit a flare to left field that fell in front of a diving Emma Roberson as Drake race to second for a double
- Drake moved to third on a single through the left side by Sophia Knock
- The next batter was Brooke Bennett and she doubled off the wall in left field
- Drake came home to score and Knock tried to score from first but was thrown out at the plate
- Maggie Hiatt's soft liner over the head of the second baseman made it 2-0 as Bennett scored
- Lancers made it 3-0 when Avery Miller pulled one through the hole at first to score pinch-runner Kate Westmiller
- Eagles got some back in the bottom of the third as Tabitha Perry drew a leadoff walk and then Katie Beck stepped in and homered to center field to make it a one run game
- Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Grayson Buckner led off with a triple down the right field line and came home on a sacrifice fly to right by Mili Watts
- Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tia Beckham hit a two-run home run down the left field line
Game 2
- In the first three innings the Eagles got two base runners each time but were unable to produce any runs
- In the third inning, Megan Powell and Bryden singled back-to-back to start the inning but the Eagles were unable to take advantage
- Winthrop finally broke through in the fourth inning as Madelyn Miller set the table with a leadoff double down the left field line
- Tabitha Perry followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs
- Two batters later Emma Jackson hit a deep fly to left in foul territory that was caught by the left fielder as she hit the fence
- The runners moved over a base and the left fielder hadn't gotten off the ground so Miller raced home for a 1-0 lead
- Powell followed with a double off the top of the wall in right center to score Perry from second
- Longwood loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth but Powell was able to work out of it with a pop up and then a force out at third
- Lancers threatened again in the top of the sixth as Maggie Hiatt drew a leadoff walk followed by a double down the left field line by Bailey Bucholz
- Two batters later Sarah Terrell plated pinch-runner Naleya Bridges with a sacrifice bunt to make it a one run lead for the Eagles
- Powell got the final out to end the threat and then recorded a 1-2-3 seventh to secure
EXTRA BASES
- This was the first time since 2017 the Eagles have take a regular season series from the Lancers
- In 2017 the Eagles swept the Lancers with three one-run victories
- Perry extended her streak of reaching base to six games while Bryden has now hit safely in four straight games
- The win puts the Eagles winning streak at four straight
- Winthrop has now won the last five meetings with Longwood
ON DECK
Winthrop has a midweek contest on Tuesday, Mar. 18 as it heads to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. for a 6 p.m. matchup with the College of Charleston.
