Softball Drops Battle With Portland State Sunday Afternoon

San Diego, Calif. – Winthrop softball battled, but fell 10-8 to Portland State on the final day of the La Jolla Invitational Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Vikings jumped out early with a run in the first with Lorraine Alo's RBI single
  • Eagles responded in the second inning to take the lead
  • With two outs and nobody on, Kaylyn Little singled followed by Madelyn Miller drawing a walk
  • Emma Roberson stepped in and delivered a single to center to score Little and tie the game
  • Eagles took a 2-1 lead as Miller scored on a wild pitch from second base
  • In the third inning the Vikings regained the lead with four runs, three of which were unearned
  • The big hit for the Vikings came on a two-run single to left by Ellie Babbitt
  • Babbitt provided more offense in the fourth inning, a two-run double to left for a 7-2 lead
  • In the fifth inning Roberson led off with a single and then stole second
  • Emma Jackson reached on a throwing error followed by a bunt single from Mili Watts to load the bases
  • Tia Beckham drove in Roberson with a sacrifice fly to left field
  • Emmy Cardenas pushed a second run across with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jackson to trail 7-4
  • Annelisa Winebarger drew a walk to put two runners on and Grayson Buckner delivered with a three-run inside the park home run to tie the game at 7-7
  • Vikings answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth
  • There were two outs and a runner at first as Grace Johnson walked and then a single up the middle by Neveah Smith put Portland State back in front
  • Alo followed that with a two-run single to right center for a 10-7 lead
  • Winthrop got one back in the top of the sixth as Emma Jackson scored Miller on a double to right center
  • Eagles did get the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh as Buckner singled with two outs as Lonna Addison put the ball in play but the game ended with a line out to second
EXTRA BASES
  • Buckner has homered in back-to-back games, the first Eagles to do so since KaDedra Temple did so May 3 & May 5 vs. USC Upstate last season
  • In the last two games the Eagles have 17 runs on 17 hits with eight extra base hits (four home runs)
  • The three RBI for Buckner gives her 50 for her collegiate career and is now six hits away from 100
ON DECK
Winthrop remains in California as it will travel to Long Beach to take on Long Beach State on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
