Long Beach, Calif. – Powered by a four-hit shutout by
Megan Powell, Winthrop earned a 1-0 victory at Long Beach State in eight innings Tuesday evening.

WHAT HAPPENED
- The Beach threatened in the first as they got runners at the corners with two outs, but Megan Powell froze Carly Robbins on a 3-2 count to end the inning
- Eagles got their first baserunner in the third inning as Annelisa Winebarger led off the inning with a single up the middle
- She moved to second with one out after Madelyn Miller singled through the left side to put two on, but were left stranded
- The Beach put a runner in scoring position at second in the bottom of the third but once again Powell got a called third strike to end the threat
- Top of the fourth, Powell singled to third with one out
- Later in the inning Emma Jackson singled off the bag at third to put Grayson Buckner in scoring position at second but was stranded after a groundout to third by Winebarger
- Eagles threatened in the top of the seventh inning as Jackson got things going with one out as she was hit by a pitch
- Winebarger followed with her second hit of the game, a single to center to put Jackson in scoring position
- Tabitha Perry worked a 1-2 count to full before striking out swinging
- Miller stepped in with a chance and put the ball with a grounder to the pitcher, but it was fielded cleanly and thrown to first for the out
- The game headed to extra innings using the international tie breaker as Miller was placed on second
- Roberson led off by sacrificing Miller over to third base
- Mili Watts stepped in and delivered a double to left to plate Miller for a 1-0 lead
- In the bottom of the eighth Jacquelyn Bickar sacrificed Lina Apodaca to third to start things off
- Powell then retired the next two batters to end the game
EXTRA BASES
- This was the first road shutout by the Eagles since Mar. 8, 2024 in a 2-0 victory at Georgia Southern
- Powell now has eight strikeouts in both of her starts that have gone at least seven innings this season as she now has 452 in her career
- Watts and Miller have now hit safely in three straight games while Powell has a team-best four-game streak of reaching base
- Miller's run gives her five on the season in five starts, tied with Roberson for the team high
ON DECK
Winthrop returns to the east coast and will have a much shorter trip as it heads down to Columbia, S.C. for the Carolina Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina Feb. 15-16. The Eagles open up play on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10:30 a.m. against Georgia State and then face Appalachian State at 1:00 p.m.
