Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop opened the Carolina Classic with a 5-3 win over Georgia State and a 6-3 win over Appalachian State, Saturday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Georgia State
- Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a couple of extra base hits
- Emma Jackson drew a walk to lead off the game and Tia Beckham followed with a walk of her own
- Megan Powell stood in and delivered a double to right center, driving in Jackson and Beckham for a 2-0 lead
- Two batters later Grayson Buckner doubled to left center to score pinch-runner Mili Watts from second
- Georgia State got two runs back in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Bella Morton
- In the top of the fourth, Peyton Bryden led off the inning with a home run to left
- Emma Roberson singled with one out and stole second to get into scoring position
- Beckham doubled with two outs to right center, scoring Roberson for a 5-2 lead
- Panthers added another run in the sixth inning but Megan Powell closed out the game and picked up her first save of the year
vs. Appalachian State
- Winthrop pushed three runs across in the bottom of the second to take the first lead of the game
- Beckham drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second on a throwing error on the next play
- Annelisa Winebarger was hit by a pitch to load the bases
- Bryden stepped in and singled to right, scoring Beckham and Buckner
- Tabitha Perry followed with a single to center, scoring Winebarger for the 3-0 lead
- Mountaineers got one back in the top of the third inning as Leah Gore singled through the hole at short to score Grace Barrett from second
- In the bottom of the third, Bryden came through again as she singled to right, scoring Buckner and Bekham
- In the fourth inning, Powell made it 6-1 with a solo home run with two outs
- Mountaineers cut the Eagle lead in half at 6-3 in the top of the sixth as Barrett delivered a two-run single
EXTRA BASES
- With the two wins the Eagles have now won three straight
- The save by Powell in the game versus Georgia State was the 5th of her collegiate career and second as an Eagle
- Powell also extended her streak of reaching base to six games and has hit safely in three straight
- Miller and Winebarger have now reached base safely in four straight games
ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16 for its second day of the Carolina Classic. The Eagles will take on Miami (OH) at 10 a.m. and then face Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m.
