Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop softball earned a split Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Classic, earning a 4-3 win in eight innings over Appalachian State after falling 7-0 in the opening game of the day to Miami (OH).

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Miami (OH)
- Miami (OH) scored six runs in the second inning
- It started with an RBI single to center by Kaylee Oh and then a sacrifice fly by Chloe Parks made it 2-0
- H. Merritt delivered an RBI single for a 3-0 lead and then Jenna Golembiewski doubled the lead to 6-0 with a three-run home run down the left field line
- Eagles threatened to get some runs back in the top of the third as Madelyn Miller reached on an error to lead off
- Emma Roberson hit into a fielder's choice that led to a force out at second
- Roberson then moved to second on a single to left by Emma Jackson
- Tia Beckham struck out swinging on a full count and Megan Powell grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat
- Peyton Bryden got into scoring position with two outs in the fourth, but was left stranded
vs. Appalachian State
- Mountaineers struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first
- A leadoff double by Makayla McClain followed by a walk put two runners on base
- A ground out moved the runners over and then two batters later Jaylee Williams singled to center, bringing two runners home
- Eagles got one back in the top of the second as Bryden drew a leadoff walk
- Sophia Lawson walked with one out and two batters later Roberson singled down the left field line to score Bryden but Lawson was thrown out on the bases to end the top half of the inning
- Macy Hamby led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field
- In the top of the fourth, Bryden and Lonna Addison had back-to-back singles but were stranded
- Eagles rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning
- Jackson singled to right with one out and Powell followed with a double down the right field line to score Jackson
- Tabitha Perry came in to pinch-run for Powell and advanced to third on a fly out to right center
- Buckner stepped in and delivered with a single to score Perry from third
- Katie Beck singled down the left field line to lead off the eighth inning and moved over to second on a wild pitch
- Three batters later Lonna Addison stepped up and doubled to center, scoring Beck for the go ahead run
- Addison, who came in relief in the second inning, retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win
EXTRA BASES
- The Eagles finished the weekend 3-1 at the Carolina Classic and have won four of the last five games
- Peyton Bryden is now on a four-game hitting streak while Annelisa Winebarger has a season-best five-game streak of reaching base
- This in extra innings over Appalachian State was the second extra innings win of the week for the Eagles
- On the weekend there were 10 different Eagles to score at least one run and seven different players drove in at least one run
ON DECK
Winthrop is back on the field Wednesday, Feb. 19 for the home opener as it hosts UNC Greensboro in a single-game at 3 p.m.
