Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop earn a split on the opening day of the Garnet & Gold Tournament with a 3-1 win over Le Moye before falling 6-2 to Brown on Friday.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Le Moyne
- Lonna Addison opened the game with a 1-2-3 inning as the she caught Arianna Exarchakis looking for the third out
- Emma Jackson led off the bottom of the first with a walk and then stole second
- Two batters later Megan Powell was hit by a pitch and then Tia Beckham walked to load the bases
- Grayson Buckner hit a fly ball to right field that was misjudged and off the top of the glove as Jackson and Powell raced around to score on the play for a 2-0 lead
- First two batters in the bottom of the second reached for the Eagles with a walk by Sophia Lawson and infield single to third base by Emma Roberson
- But the two were left stranded as Powell laced a shot right at the outfielder for the third out
- Winthrop's lead was cut in half in the top of the third as Exarchakis doubled to right center, scoring Kara Bacon from second
- In the bottom of the fifth the Eagles added some insurance as Tia Beckham homered to center with two outs for a 3-1 lead
- Addison finished the game with 11 strikeouts allowing the one run on three hits and issued on walk
vs. Brown
- Eagles grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first, pushing two runs across
- Powell drew a two out walk and then Beckham hit a flare to right field
- The right fielder ran a long way to try and make the catch and lunged at the ball which went off the edge of the glove as she fell to the ground as Powell moved to third and Beckham reached with a double
- Buckner stepped up and hit a soft fly ball to shallow left that the left fielder dropped as Powell and Beckham raced around to score on the play
- Brown got its first hit and first run in the top of the fourth inning as Amanda Deng singled up the middle with pinch-runner Kalcee Klus on second as she came around to score on the play
- The Bears grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth inning, pushing three runs across
- Brown took a 3-2 lead on a two-run home run by Laurel Moody to left field
- The third run of the inning came on an errant throw to third that allowed the base runner to go home on the play to trail 4-2
- In the bottom of the seventh Roberson reached on an error to lead things off
- Jackson singled to center and the center fielder bobbled the ball allowing Roberson to move to third
- Madelyn Miller struck out followed by a pop up by Powell and fly out to right by Beckham to end the threat
EXTRA BASES
- Addison's 11 strikeouts were the highest in an appearance this season and matched her season total before the game began
- Roberson got a hit in each game and now has the top current hitting streak at four games
ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22 for day two of the Garnet & Gold Tournament as it will take on St. John's at 3 p.m. and Youngstown State at 5:30 p.m.
