Eagles Split On Day 2 Of La Jolla Inv.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Diego, Calif.  – Winthrop softball earned a split on day two of the La Jolla Invitational earning a 9-0 victory over UC San Diego after falling 14-3 to BYU earlier in the day.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. BYU
  • Eagles struck first, pushing one across in the first inning
  • Emma Jackson drew a leadoff walk while Megan Powell followed with a walk to put two on with no outs
  • Tia Beckham followed with a single to left to load the bases
  • Grayson Buckner drew a bases loaded walk to score Jackson on the play
  • BYU made a pitching change and two batters later got an inning ending double play to limit the Eagles to the one run
  • The Cougars pushed four runs across in the top of the second
  • With the game tied 1-1 the Cougars hit into a fielder's choice as two runs came around to score on the play and then an RBI double to right by Aleia Agbayani made it 4-1
  • Eagles got two runs back in the bottom of the second to make it a one run game
  • Kaylyn Little led off with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second
  • Tabitha Perry pinch-ran for Little and came around to score when Emma Roberson reached on an error by the left fielder
  • Two batters later Powell tripled to right, scoring Roberson to trail 4-3
  • Cougars added two more runs in the third inning as the first came on a throwing error and the second on a groundout to short
  • BYU powered its way to four runs in the fourth inning as Ilove'a Brittingham provided a two-run double and Kella Kamoku hit a two-run home run to right field
  • Cougars went on to win the game 14-3 in six innings
vs. UC San Diego
  • Eagles used an 8-run third to open up the game
  • Buckner led off the inning with a home run to left to get things started
  • Roberson followed with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by Jackson
  • Mili Watts doubled to center, scoring Roberson for a 2-0 lead
  • Powell singled to left to bring home Watts for a three run lead
  • Tia Beckham stepped in and delivered a two-run shot to left to put the Eagles up 5-0
  • Madelyn Miller made it 6-0 when she doubled to right center, scoring pinch-runner Annelisa Winebarger
  • Miller eventually scored on an error and Jackson drove in the 8th run on a bases loaded ground out to second base
  • Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth as Beckham led off with a home run to center
  • Powell and Miller combined on a two-hit shutout in the circle

EXTRA BASES
  • Beckham is the first Eagle to home twice in a game since teammate Megan Powell last season on Mar. 30 vs. Radford
  • Beckham set career-highs in hits (3) and RBI (3)
  • The home run for Buckner was the 12th of her career and second as an Eagle
  • The eight runs in the third were the most runs in an inning since Mar. 13, 2021 at Mercer (7)
  • The last time the Eagles had eight or more runs in an inning came on Apr. 21, 2021 vs. S.C. State with nine
  • The Eagles had eight different players score a run and six different players drove in a run

Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 9 for the final day of the La Jolla Invitational as it will face Portland State at 3:30 p.m.
