Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop softball fell 12-2 to USC Upstate in the 2026 Big South Conference Championship game, Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Softball Stadium.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Eagles struck first as Rebecca Amos led off the game with a single through the left side
- Two batters later, Darrah Nickens doubled off the wall in center and as Amos reached third the throw got away and bounced into foul territory
- Amos raced home on the play for a 1-0 lead
- Tia Beckham followed with a deep fly to center to score Nickens from third for a 2-0 lead
- Upstate answered in the bottom of the first as Taliyah Thomas led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Sophia Kardatzke
- Ella Christopher came through two batters later with a single to the left side just out of reach of Grayson Buckner at short
- Thomas scored from second on the single by Christopher to make it a 2-1 lead for Winthrop
- Laney Jennings tied the game at 2-2 as she led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left center
- Abby Polk followed with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position
- After getting sacrificed to third, Thomas stepped in and took a 3-1 pitch over the fence in center for a 4-2 lead
- Alyssa Davenport and Polk had RBI doubles in the third and Thomas drove in a run on a single to lead 7-2
- Christopher led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run that sparked a five run inning to lead 12-2
EXTRA BASES
- This was the Eagles 16th Big South Championship appearance, the most by any league school
- Nickens RBI gave her 43 for the season, tying Peyton Bryden for the 8th most in program history for a single-season
- Amos had a single in the first, giving her 58 hits on the season which are the second-most ever by a Winthrop freshman
