San Diego, Calif. – Behind a strong pitching performance by
Megan Powell the Winthrop softball team opened the season with a 4-1 victory over Portland State on the first day of the La Jolla Invitational Friday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Portland State
- Megan Powell got the Eagles off to a very strong start as she struck out the side to open the game, all three swinging
- In the bottom of the first freshman Katie Beck singled in her first collegiate at-bat with one away
- A force out and fly out to left field ended the inning
- Annelisa Winebarger doubled to right field with one out in the bottom of the second, but was left stranded
- Eagles struck first in the third inning, taking advantage of a couple of miscues by the Vikings
- Emma Roberson reached on an error to start the bottom half and moved to second on a wild pitch
- Emma Jackson singled and then moved to second on a throwing error that allowed Roberson to round third and score for a 1-0 lead
- With two outs, Tia Beckham hit a shot to right that was misplayed by the right fielder as Jackson was able to score from second on the error
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles added some insurance runs as Madelyn Miller doubled to center with two outs and scored on a triple to right center by Roberson
- Jackson reached on a fielding error by the third baseman as Roberson scored from third to lead 4-0
- Lorraine Alo reached on an error and advanced to second on the play to lead off the top of the seventh for the Vikings and eventually scored on a Natalia Martinez single to right center
- Portland State did load the bases with two outs but Powell struck out Gracie Toney to end the game
- Powell tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts
vs. BYU
- Rained out and will not be made up
EXTRA BASES
- The win in the circle by Powell vs. Portland State was the 39th win of her collegiate career and 10th as an Eagle
- Emma Roberson set career-highs in runs (2) and hits (2)
- This is the third straight year the Eagles have won the season opener and the eighth time in the last nine seasons
ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on day two of the La Jolla Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 8 as it will take on BYU at 2 p.m. and then the host UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m.
