Beck's 5 RBI Lead Eagles Over Marist, Fall To Southern Indiana

Rock Hill, S.C. –  Winthrop split on the opening day of the Coach Cooke Memorial, starting off the day with a 5-1 win over Marist before falling 2-1 to Southern Indiana.

GAME INFORMATION

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Marist
  • Eagles struck first as Katie Beck hit a two-run home run to left for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second
  • Marist responded in the top of the third inning as Miah McDonald led off with a home run to center
  • It remained a one run game until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles added some insurance runs
  • Megan Powell singled to right with one out to get things started
  • Tia Beckham followed with a single through the hole at short and then Peyton Bryden walked to load the bases
  • Beck stepped in and took a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for a bases clearing double and a 5-1 lead4 strikeouts
  • Powell retired the side in order in three of the final four innings to improve to 5-2 on the year in the circle
vs. Southern Indiana
  • The first four innings saw the starting pitchers allowed just one hit each and combined for 14 strikeouts
  • Kate Satkoski homered to left field with one out to take a 1-0 lead
  • USI added another run in the sixth as Olivia Money doubled to left, scoring Caroline Stapleton from second
  • Eagles didn't go down without a fight as they threatened to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh
  • Powell reached on a fielding error and was replaced by pinch-runner Emma Roberson at first
  • Tia Beckham nearly tied it with one swing as flied out as the center field caught the ball up against the wall  
  • Bryden singled to right to put runners at first and second with one out
  • Beck roped a double off the top of the left field fence but only one run was able to score as Roberson came home from second and Bryden moved to third
  • Two batters later Emmy Cardenas drew a walk to load the bases but the Eagles were unable to push another run across  

EXTRA BASES
  • Powell earned her fifth win of the season, which is the 42nd of her career
  • Powell and Jackson both pushed their hitting streaks to five games vs. Marist before they came to an end against Southern Indiana
  • Beck drove in all five runs in the win over Marist
  • Beck is the first Eagle with five RBI in a game since Powell drove in 5 on Mar. 30 against Radford in game two of a doubleheader

Winthrop is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 1 for day two of the Coach Cooke Memorial. Winthrop will face Charlotte at 3 p.m. and then take on St. Bonaventure at 5:30 p.m.
