Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop lacrosse program opened their 2025 season by falling to the San Diego State Aztecs at home on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop took a 2-0 lead at the 9:19 mark on goals by Madison Mayer and Ashlee Gensits
- The Aztecs answered with three straight goals to go up one three minutes later
- The Eagles responded with three straight goals of their own to go back out in front by two early in the second quarter
- The lead then seesawed for the rest of the half and the two teams would enter the locker room tied at eight
- San Diego State would outscore Winthrop 11-3 in the second half to clinch the win
NOTABLES (TEAM)
- Eagles are now 102-108 all-time as a program
- Eagles are now 50-42 all-time at home
- Winthrop moves to 6-7 all-time in season openers
- Winthrop won 17 draw controls to SDSU's 15
- Winthrop also had 10 saves to SDSU's seven
- Five Eagles scored two goals
- Mayer and Tori Iannotti won five and six draw controls, respectively
- Four Eagles made their debut
ON DECK
Winthrop travels to Davidson, N.C. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for a matchup with the Wildcats of Davidson College. The game will be at 6:30 p.m. EST and the game will be shown on ESPN+.
