Eagles Hold Off Runnin' Bulldogs For 11th Straight Home Win

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop held off Gardner-Webb for a 96-93 victory and an 11th straight home victory, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference men's basketball action.

  • Darryl Simmons II (40 points, rebound)
  • Jamaine Mann (20 points, 7 rebounds)
  • Shahar Lazar (9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • Jamaine Mann opened the scoring and gave Gardner-Webb an early lead as he scored off a drive down the middle of the lane
  • K.J. Doucet came right back to tie the game as he scored off the drive
  • Runnin' Bulldogs built a 6-2 advantage as Mann scored again at the rim and then Anthony Selden scored at the rim
  • A Tommy Kamarad three pulled the Eagles within one at 8-7, but Gardner-Webb matched it as Shahar Lazar knocked down a left wing three
  • Gardner-Webb led 19-16 at the 12:38 mark when the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take the lead as it started with a Doucet bucket off a turnover forcing a Gardner-Webb timeout
  • Out of the timeout the Eagles got a defensive stop and then Doucet drilled a three for a 21-19 lead
  • Kelton Talford capped off the run with a tough basket inside to lead 23-19 with 10:59 left in the half
  • Gardner-Webb regained the lead and pushed it to five after back-to-back threes from Darryl Simmons II
  • The Runnin' Bullodgs extended the lead to as much as six with 7:32 left but the Eagles clawed their way back to tie the game at 33-33 with just under six minutes after Paul Jones III scored on a short jumper in the lane
  • Eagles proceeded to score seven straight points to take a 37-33 lead with 3:03 on the clock as four different Eagles contributed to the run
  • Winthrop built its own six point advantage at the 1:42 mark after two free throws by Nick Johnson and held on to lead by five at the break, 45-40

SECOND HALF
  • The first possession of the second half was a turnover by Kasen Harrison turned into a drive and score by Mann
  • That started a series of eight straight possession with a bucket as the teams traded blows in the early going of the half
  • A Talford dunk off an inbound pass at the baseline put the Eagles up 58-54 and sparked the Eagles to push the lead to seven points at the 14:29 mark as Kamarad buried another three
  • Two free throws by Harrison put the Eagles up eight and then to nine points after Bryce Baker made here free throws with 12:12 left
  • Simmons II answered right back to cut the Winthrop lead to seven as he scored on a second chance layup
  • Eagles continued to extend their lead inch, by inch and took their first double-digit lead at the 11:30 mark as Isaiah Wilson drained a straight away three to lead 74-64
  • Eagles led by 10 at the 11:05 mark after a Talford dunk, but Gardner-Webb used a 6-0 spurt to pull within four with 9:31 remaining
  • Gardner-Webb made it a one point game after Simmons II converted two free throws on back-to-back possession to trail 80-79 with 7:40 to play
  • Gardner-Webb tied the game at 81-81 with 6:23 remaining after contested layup by Ademide Badmus
  • Eagles regained the lead and led by four points with 5:17 to play after a driving layup by Harrison
  • Gardner-Webb worked its way back into the lead as Lazar scored inside and then a straight way three by Simmons II for an 89-87 lead with 3:56 to play
  • The game was tied 92-92 when Simmons II drove to the basket and his shot bounced off glass and on the rim a couple of times before falling out as Talford boarded the miss
  • Talford pushed the ball ahead as Harrison took the pass and drove all the way to the rim and finished an And-1
  • Harrison converted the free throw to lead 95-92 with 1:26 remaining
  • Eagles held a three point advantage with 25.5 seconds left after Harrison hit 1-of-2 frere throws
  • On the other end, Yoro Diallo forced a held ball and the possession arrow favored the Eagles with 9.4 seconds left
  • Then Gardner-Webb forced a held ball of its own with 5.5 seconds left, giving them a chance to tie the game
  • Runnin' Bulldogs got a look but Jacob Hudson's straight away three was short

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles finished the game shooting 54 percent from the floor while Gardner-Webb shot 56 percent
  • Runnin's Bulldogs were 10-of-20 behind the arc while the Eagles were 6-for-18 (33%)
  • The two teams combined for 63 free three attempts as the Eagles were 26-for-40 and Gardner-Webb hit 17-of-23 at the line
  • The battled of the boards favored Gardner-Webb 39-30 as each team finished with nine on the offensive glass
  • Winthrop scored 52 points in the paint compared to 42 for Gardner-Webb
  • Gardner-Webb scored 13 points off 10 Winthrop turnovers while the Eagles scored 12 points on 14 Gardner-Webb miscues
  • Winthrop made four of its final five shots while Gardner-Webb missed four of its final five shots

  • The Eagles have now won 11 straight games at home and the 14th home win of the season
  • It is the 10th time in program history the Eagles have earned at least 14 home wins in a single-season
  • Talford hit the 20-point mark (20 points) for the second straight game and 7th time this season (23rd time of his career)
  • Talford surpassed 1,700 career points and now has 1,714

The Eagles will be back on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 5 as they head down near the coast to N. Charleston, S.C. to take on Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.
