Big Second Half Lifts Eagles To Road Win At Charleston Southern

N. Charleston, S.C. – Winthrop outscored Charleston Southern 28-9 in a little over an eight minute span of the second half to captured an 83-65 road win, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's basketball action.

  • Taje' Kelly (27 points, 9 rebounds, assist, steal)
  • Daylen Berry (21 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals)
  • Keenan Wilkins (9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists)

FIRST HALF
  • Winthrop grabbed the first lead as Kelton Talford converted two free throws in the first minute
  • Talford scored the first six points for the Eagles as they led 6-2 at the 17:37 mark
  • Eagles built a 12-7 lead as Nick Johnson scored at the rim followed by a left-handed baby hook from Logan Duncomb
  • Both teams went on a scoring drought over a four minute span, but it was the Eagles who broke out of it first as Talford scored inside for an 18-10 lead with 8:50 to play in the half
  • Eagles pushed the lead to double-digits with just a little over seven minutes left as Talford hit K.J. Doucet cutting to the basket for the layup
  • Winthrop held the Bucs scoreless for nearly six and a half minutes and without a field goal for around second and a half minutes
  • Kennan Wilkins ended the drought without a field goal as he scored inside to trail 22-15
  • Eagles came right back with a three from Doucet to put the Eagles up by 12
  • Bucs got the deficit to single-digits with 19.2 seconds left in the half
  • Eagles shot 41 percent from the floor while holding the Bucs to 33 percent shooting to lead 33-25 at the break 

SECOND HALF
  • Talford opened the scoring of the second half as well as he scored at the rim off a feed from Nick Johnson
  • Bucs outscored the Eagles 9-2 to open the half, scoring nine straight after the Talford bucket
  • Ryan Jolly ended the run as he knocked down a three to lead 38-34
  • Jolly scored five straight points as he made two free throws to lead 40-36 with 16:37 remaining
  • Daylen Berry made it a one point game as he knocked down a right wing three, only to be match by Tommy Kamarad on the other end to push the lead back to four
  • That three ignited a 12-0 run by the Eagles over the next three minutes and 20 seconds
  • A tip-in by Duncomb at the 14:36 mark put the Eagles up 47-39 and then Kasen Harrison found Yoro Diallo open on the right wing for three and he swished it to push the lead back to double-digits
  • The run was capped off by a Kasen Harrison score off a drive, forcing a Charleston Southern timeout
  • Out of the timeout Taje' Kelly scored inside, as the Eagles led 52-41
  • After a three-point play by Berry, the Eagles responded with a 9-0 run to push the lead back to double-digits at 63-46 with 9:35 to play
  • Winthrop extended its lead to 20 points at 68-48 after Johnson buried a corner three in transition with 8:22 remaining
  • Eagles cruised from there to capture the 83-65 road win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 61 percent in the second half to finish at 51 percent for the game
  • Winthrop held Charleston Southern to 38 percent shooting, 6-of-24 behind the arc
  • The battle on the glass favored the Eagles 43-34 and 11 offensive boards turned into 16 points
  • Eagles outscored the Bucs 46-36 in the paint
  • Leading 40-39, the Eagles outscored the Bucs 28-9 over the next eight minutes to push their lead to 20 points
  • During that span the Eagles were 11-of-14 from the field, 4-for-5 behind the arc

NOTABLES
  • Kasen Harrison reached two milestones on the evening as he scored his 1,000th point as an Eagle and reached 1,500 career points for his collegiate career
  • Harrison is the 29th Eagle to score 1,000 points in their career
  • Harrison also moved into a tie for 10th with Andre Smith for the most career assists in program history with 322
  • This was the 11th straight victory over the Bucs and the 11 straight win at the Buc Dome
