Duncomb's Double-Double Paces Eagles In Loss To Coastal

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop dropped an 88-84 contest with Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon as Joshua Beadle broke a tie game with three free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining.
 
WINTHROP (5-5, 0-0 Big South) COASTAL CAROLINA (6-4, 0-0 Sun Belt)
  • RaSheed Jones (23 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists)
  • A.J. Dancler (18 points. 2 rebounds)
  • Reggie Hill (14 points, 9 rebounds, assist, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • Both teams earned their first points at the free throw line as Logan Duncomb for Winthrop and Reggie Hill for Coastal converted both
  • Eagles led 6-2 when A.J. Dancler dropped in a left wing three, but Kody Clouet responded with a three of his own from the right wing to lead 9-5
  • The three by Clouet started a 7-0 run that pushed the Eagles lead to 13-5 after two Josh Meo free throws at the 15:58 mark
  • The run ended on a corner three by Dancler on the ensuing possession following the Meo free throws
  • Coastal battled its way back to tie the game at 23-23 at the 11:02 mark after two free throws from Rasheed Jones
  • Eagles regained the lead on the next possession as Rozier knocked down a pull up three
  • Coastal built a four point advantage with 5:54 left in the half after two free throws by Jones
  • Tommy Kamarad scored inside off glass followed by two free throws from Seifeldin Hendawy to tie the game again at 35-35 with just over five minutes remaining
  • A straight away three from Rozier with 2:33 left had the Eagles in front 42-40
  • The Chanticleers tied the game with a baseline dunk from Tristan Thompson off a feed from Derrick Green and then led 45-42 after a three from Dajohn Craig with 1:38 remaining
  • Winthrop scored the final bucket of the half as Clouet boarded a miss and then knocked down a free throw line jumper with 38 seconds to go as Coastal led 45-44 at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Chants opened the second half scoring as Nadjrick Peat scored inside
  • Winthrop regained the lead as Duncomb dropped in hook shots on back-to-back possessions to lead 47-46
  • Tied at 48-48 at the 17:52 mark, the Eagles went on an 8-0 run powered by back-to-back threes from Clouet to lead 55-48 with under 16 to play, forcing a timeout by Coastal
  • The Chants ended a scoring drought a little over three and a half minutes as Dancler buried a contested three from the right wing with 14:07 to play
  • Coastal used an 8-1 run over a two minute span to tie the game once again at 56-56 with 12:14 remaining
  • The teams began to trade blows as Daylen Berry dropped in a three after boarding a miss only to have Coastal scored five straight highlighted by a straight away three from Hill
  • Isaiah Wilson put the Eagles back in front as he attacked the rim and scored an And 1 as he completed the three-point play for a 64-63 lead
  • Winthrop 7:37 to play, Dancler dropped in another three only to be matched by Berry from the wing
  • Dancler drained another three on the ensuing possession but Clouet dropped in a three to tie the game at 76-76 with 6:36 remaining
  • Coastal regained the lead at 78-76 with a short turnaround from Joshua Beadle and then pushed it to three points after Beadle was 1-of-2 at the line
  • Beadle scored again on a short jumper for five consecutive points to lead 81-76 with 4:47 to play
  • Duncomb made it a one possession game with just under four minutes remaining as he worked his way in the paint and dropped in a left-handed hook
  • Duncomb then made a defensive stop on the other end with a block on Dancler drive to the rim as Rozier boarded the block and was fouled with 3:29 left
  • Rozier stepped to the line and made both free throw to make it a one point game in favor of Coastal
  • The lead was back to three after Jones converted two free throws at the 3:13 mark to lead 84-81
  • Over the next three minutes, neither team was able to score until Berry scored in transition with an And 1 and converted the free throw to tie the game at 84-84 with 59.6 left
  • Eagles got the ball with around a seven second difference in the clock and shot clock as Berry's short jumper with 10 seconds left didn't fall and the ball bounced around until Coastal possessed it and pushed the ball up the floor
  • Beadle pulled up for a three in transition that was off the mark but Berry was whistled for a foul with 3.3 seconds left as he knocked down all three free throws for the lead
  • Eagles off an inbound out of a timeout threw the ball down court as Clouet caught the ball but was able to keep his feet in bounds
  • After fouling, Thompson made 1-of-2 free throws to give Coastal an 88-84 win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Eagles shot 38 percent from the floor, 32 percent behind the arc (10-of-31)
  • Coastal Carolina shot 48 percent from the field and and 46 percent from three (12-of-26)
  • The teams combined for 60 free throws as the Eagles were 24-for-34 and the Chanticleers were 20-for-26
  • Winthrop dominated the glass 47-35, finishing with 21 offensive boards that led to 22 second chance points
  • Points in the paint favored Coastal Carolina 26-22
  • Logan Duncomb posted a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds
  • Kareem Rozier scored a team-high 19 points followed by Clouet with 18
  • From the 14:07 mark of the second half, the Chanticleers hit 12-of-14 shots from the field that included eight straight makes

NOTABLES
  • Kareem Rozier finished with two assists as he reached 300 for his career
  • Rozier also hauled in a career-high eight rebounds
  • The double-double for Duncomb was the second of his career and his third game with 10 or more boards
  • Eagles home winning streak vs. non-conference opponents comes to an end at 10
