Eagles Fall At #15 Texas Tech Sunday Afternoon

Lubbock, Texas – Winthrop men's basketball couldn't overcome a slow start as it fell 87-57 at 15th-ranked Texas Tech, Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball.

  • Chris Anderson (29 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, steal)
  • Jaylen Petty (20 points, 6 rebounds, assist, 2 steals)
  • J.T. Toppin (14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • Texas Tech won the tip and on the first possession J.T. Toppin cleaned up a missed three and scored on a layup for the early lead
  • Red Raiders opened with a 7-0 run as Christian Anderson drilled a straight away three
  • Eagles first bucket came at the 18:00 mark as Logan Duncomb scored inside
  • Texas Tech pushed the lead to 11-2 as Jaylen Petty beat everyone down the floor as he took a pass and slammed it home at the 16:25 mark
  • After two free throws from Ed Nnamoko made it an 11-4 lead, the Red Raiders hit back-to-back threes from Petty and Donovan Atwell to extend the lead to 17-4
  • Those threes were part of a 14-0 run to lead 25-4 with 11:53 to play in the half
  • The run ended up as 21 consecutive points as the Red Raiders led 35-4 with just over eight to play
  • Daylen Berry ended the run with a three, to end a stretch of 0-for-14 from the field by the Eagles
  • Seifeldin Hendawy drove to the middle of the paint and dropped in a short jumper to trail 38-9 with 6:44 left

SECOND HALF
  • Eagles opened the half with a 7-0 run as Kody Clouet knocked down a baseline jumper followed by a Berry finish at the rim in transition and a three-point play from Kareem Rozier to trail 59-28
  • Atwell stopped the run with a three, but the Eagles responded with five straight as Tommy Kamarad hit two free throws and Rozier splashed in a three
  • Eagles used a 6-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 66-39 as Rozier dropped in a jumper and then a steal by Berry led to a basket on the other end by Clouet to force a Texas Tech timeout with 13:51 to play
  • Eagles went on a 12-0 run, holding the Red Raiders without a point for over four and a half minutes to dig away at the deficit, trailing 76-54 with 5:41 remaining
  • The run was highlighted by a drive and dunk from Hendawy as he finished the left hand and then capped off by another three-point play by Rozier
  • The drought ended for the Red Raiders on a steal by Petty that led to a layup for Toppin, which jump started a 6-0 spurt to halt the attempt to work the deficit below 20

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles connected on a season-low four triples as they finished at 16 percent behind the arc and 32 percent from the field
  • Texas Tech finished the game at 50 percent, as the Eagles held the Red Raiders to 27 percent in the second half
  • Battle on the boards favored the Red Raiders 38-34 as the Eagles had a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass
  • For the fourth time this season the Eagles had 10 or more steals, snagging 11 while forcing 14 turnovers
  • Winthrop opened the game 1-for-13 from the floor while Texas Tech was 12-of-19 over the first 10 minutes which allowed for the Red Raiders to build a 20-plus advantage

NOTABLES
  • Duncomb reached double-figures (11) for a 7th straight contest and just nearly missed a double-double with nine rebounds
  • Winthrop held Texas Tech to 28 second half points, tying the second-fewest in the second half this season
  • Eagles finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a winning record for a 3rd straight season and have a .500 or better record 13 of the last 14 seasons

The Eagles jump into Big South Conference play as they head to Farmville, Va. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 to take on Longwood at 3 p.m. in the opener.
