Farmville, Va – Winthrop men's basketball fell 82-70 at Longwood in the Big South opener, Saturday afternoon at the Joan Perry Brock Center.
WINTHROP (8-8, 0-1 Big South)
LONGWOOD (9-7, 1-0 Big South)
- Redd Thompson (15 points, 2 assists)
- Jacoi Hutchinson (14 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, steal, block)
- Elijah Tucker (12 points, 9 rebounds, assist, block)
FIRST HALF
- Emanuel Richards knocked down a jumper to give Longwood the first lead, but the Eagles answered with a bucket inside off the glass by Logan Duncomb
- Longwood regained the lead 5-2 after a three from Alphonzo Billups III
- Eagles grabbed their first lead with a 4-0 spurt, all at the free throw line from Tommy Kamarad and Seifeldin Hendawy
- After Pharrell Boygueno put the Eagles in front 9-8, the Lancers answered with a 9-0 run capped off by a trail right wing three from Redd Thompson Jr. forcing a Winthrop timeout
- Out of the timeout the Eagles scored as Duncomb tipped in a miss
- Longwood extended the lead to double-digits at the 6:06 mark after Thompson Jr. scored at the rim to lead 28-18
- Daylen Berry found Duncomb for a dunk with 1:41 and then a tip-in by Duncomb cut the deficit to 35-27 with 1:14 left in the half
- Berry hit two free throws for the final points of the half to get the deficit to single-digits before the half
SECOND HALF
- Winthrop was within eight points after a Duncomb tip-in with 16:35, trailing 42-34
- A three from Elijah Kelly pushed the Lancers lead back to 12 at the 15:11 mark, but a three-point play by Duncomb cut the deficit nine again
- Hendawy found Duncomb cutting to the basket as he finished with a slam to pull the Eagles within seven points with 14:23 to play
- Winthrop pulled within six points with 13:21 to play after a steal by Isaiah Wilson led to two free throws on the other end as he knocked down both
- A three by Kareem Rozier made a two-possession game with 11:07 remaining
- Jacoi Hutchinson's second chance bucket followed by a three from Jaylen Benard put Longwood back on top by double-digits midway through the half
- Longwood pushed the lead back to 10 points but once again the Eagles fought back to make it a two possession game at 66-61 with 6:26 left
- That was as close as the Eagles were able to get as Longwood held off the Eagles
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop finished the game shooting 32 percent while Longwood shot 52 percent
- Eagles were just 5-of-24 behind the arc while the Lancers were 7-for-18
- The two teams combined for 53 free throws as the Eagles were 25-of-32 and Longwood finished 15-of-21
- Longwood had a 41-35 edge on the glass while the Eagles had a 17-14 advantage on the offensive end
- Lancers outscored the Eagles 44-30 in the paint and had a 16-13 advantage in second chance points
- Logan Duncomb led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and also led the way with 13 rebounds for his 5th double-double of the season
NOTABLES
- Duncomb is the first Eagle with a 30-point game in conference play since K.J. Doucet scored 30 on Mar. 1 against UNC Asheville at home
- Berry led the Eagles in assists (4) for the 3rd straight game and 5th time this season
- The loss ends a three-game win streak against the Lancers
- With the loss, the Eagles have still won 11 of the last 13 Big South openers
