Eagles Soar Past Newberry for First Win of the Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team found its rhythm on both ends of the floor, forcing 31 turnovers to defeat Newberry, 74-37, on Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop Coliseum. 
Game Recap 
First Quarter 
  • The Eagles set the tone early, turning defense into offense with 7 steals in the opening frame. 
  • Cori Lard opened the scoring with a layup on the first possession and later added another in transition. 
  • Madison Ruff led the early charge with several baskets off turnovers, while Mya Hamilton's first career points on a late three-pointer gave Winthrop a 17-6 lead after one 

Second Quarter 
  • Winthrop extended its lead thanks to consistent ball movement and fast-break play. 
  • Naomi Wilson anchored the defense with 2 steals and a block, while Amourie Porter scored inside to push the advantage. 
  • The Eagles outscored the Wolves 23-13 in the quarter to take a 40-19 halftime lead. 

Third Quarter 
  • Winthrop maintained control as Marykate Kent buried a pair of threes and Ruff continued attacking the rim. 
  • Naomi Wilson pulled down her eighth rebound of the game, helping the Eagles dominate the glass and hold Newberry to just 12 third-quarter points 

Fourth Quarter 
  • The Eagles closed strong behind a deep bench effort. 
  • Persais Williams tipped in her own miss in the final seconds, capping a 21-point quarter for Winthrop. 
  • The defense limited Newberry to just six points in the final 10 minutes to seal the 74-37 win 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Madison Ruff paced the Eagles with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Amourie Porter and Mya Pierfax each added 12. 
  • Cori Lard contributed 9 points, 6 assists, and a team-high 5 steals. 
  • Naomi Wilson posted a game-high mark with 10 rebounds. 
  • Winthrop shot 44% from the floor, forced 31 turnovers, and recorded 18 steals compared to Newberry's 5.
