Lard, Pierfax Powers Eagles Past South Carolina State, 66-45

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Winthrop clamped down defensively and used the backcourt duo of Cori Lard and Mya Pierfax to a 66-45 road win over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
FIRST QUARTER
  • South Carolina State jumped out 5-0 behind a layup and an early three from Mya Byrd.
  • Amourie Porter put Winthrop on the board at the line, knocking down two free throws to trim the deficit to 5-2.
  • Madison Ruff steadied the offense, scoring on a driving layup and a short jumper in the paint as Winthrop began to find a rhythm inside.
  • Pierfax and Tocarra Johnson combined on the glass, with Johnson's putback finishing a sequence of strong interior defense and rebounding to give Winthrop a 15-13 edge.
  • Ryiah Wilson capped a 17-8 response to the early hole with a fastbreak layup in the final seconds, sending the Eagles to the first-quarter break in front, 17-13.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Johnson kept attacking the offensive glass, following a missed layup with a tip-in to push the lead to 19-15.
  • Lard buried a three-pointer from the wing off a Pierfax feed, and Porter sprinted out for a fastbreak layup moments later as Winthrop strung together a 7-2 burst to build a 24-15 cushion.
  • South Carolina State answered with its best stretch of the half, stringing together an 8-0 run, started by Feliah Greer at the line and Heaven Harper inside, to slice the margin to 26-25.
  • Winthrop's bench responded, as Mya Hamilton turned a steal into two free throws in transition to nudge the lead back to 28-25.
  • Pierfax closed the half by slicing through the lane for a late layup, sending the Eagles into the locker room up 30-25.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Porter opened the second-half scoring with a jumper in the paint to make it 32-25, setting the tone.
  • After a Shaunice Reed 3-pointer briefly cut the margin to 32-28, Pierfax answered with back-to-back triples, the first in transition off a Ruff rebound and assist, the second on the next trip, stretching the lead to 38–28.
  • Lard continued to pick apart the defense, knocking down a midrange jumper to push the advantage to 40–29.
  • Pierfax stayed aggressive, knocking down two free throws late in the frame, and Jada Ryce capped the period with a jumper to send Winthrop into the fourth quarter firmly in control, 48-33, after an 18-8 third-quarter advantage.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Porter stayed hot to start the fourth, drilling another jumper in the lane to extend the lead to 50-33.
  • Lard blew the game open with a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Wilson followed by sinking four straight free throws, pushing the margin to 57-35 as Winthrop's pressure defense continued to cause turnovers.
  • Lard then turned another steal into two more points at the line, stretching the lead to 59-35 before Harper briefly halted the surge with free throws on the other end.
  • Williams added a free throw, and Lard scored again at the rim to make it 63-42 before Wilson drilled a late three-pointer to give Winthrop its largest lead of the day at 66-42.
  • A late Reed three for South Carolina State provided the final margin, as Winthrop closed out a 66-45 road victory.
