ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team turned Wednesday night into a track meet at Winthrop Coliseum, racing past Johnson & Wales (N.C.) behind a 29-3 opening quarter. Five Eagles scored in double figures, led by a dominant double-double from
Tocarra Johnson, as Winthrop piled up 58 points in the paint and forced 31 turnovers to move to 6-4.
FIRST QUARTER
- Cori Lard got the Eagles going in transition, finding Madison Ruff for a layup on the break and then feeding Tocarra Johnson inside as Winthrop opened on an 11-0 burst.
- Johnson went right at the interior early, scoring three straight layups as the Eagles repeatedly attacked the rim and owned the glass.
- Ryiah Wilson joined the party from deep, knocking down back-to-back threes on the wing to stretch the margin into the 20s.
- Winthrop's press and half-court pressure completely smothered the Wildcats, forcing turnovers on their first several trips and turning those miscues directly into fast-break points.
- Johnson capped a monster quarter with another finish at the rim in the final 30 seconds, sending Winthrop to the break in front 29-3 after ten minutes of near-perfect defense.
SECOND QUARTER
- Amourie Porter opened the second period by cutting backdoor for a layup off another Lard dime, and Mya Pierfax followed with a driving finish as the Eagles kept their foot down.
- Ruff cashed in at the line and then turned a steal into a run-out layup, extending the cushion while Winthrop's pressure kept JWU from ever settling into its offense.
- Johnson continued to own the glass on both ends, drawing contact and knocking down free throws.
- Wilson slashed in transition for another layup, then kicked out to Mya Hamilton for a three from the left wing to push the Eagles past the 50-point mark before halftime.
- A late jumper from the Wildcats cut slightly into the deficit, but Winthrop still took a commanding 52-13 lead into the locker room behind 36 points off turnovers and complete control of the pace.
THIRD QUARTER
- Pierfax set the tone out of the break, following her own miss for a putback, then knocking down free throws after drawing contact on the next trip.
- Ruff kept slicing through the defense, converting multiple transition layups off steals from the backcourt to keep the tempo firmly in Winthrop's favor.
- Pierfax then went nuclear from deep, drilling threes on the wing and from the top of the key as the Eagles' lead ballooned and the Wildcats scrambled to chase shooters.
- Johnson and Porter continued to hammer the interior, combining for putbacks and dump-off finishes as Winthrop dominated second-chance opportunities.
- Wilson added another driving layup and Jada Ryce buried a three late in the period, sending the Eagles into the fourth on top 81-29 after a 29-point quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Johnson opened the final frame with yet another finish at the rim off a Porter feed, then scored again inside to put the game fully out of reach.
- Porter joined Johnson in attack mode, slicing in for a layup and later cashing in at the stripe as she closed in on a triple-double line.
- Ruff continued to find seams in transition, adding a jumper and another layup as Winthrop's bench kept the energy and pressure high.
- Pierfax drilled her fourth three of the night and Wilson cut through the lane for a fast-break bucket as the Eagles' offense sailed past the century mark.
- Williams added late free throws and a transition layup, and Porter knocked down two more at the line in the final minute to punctuate the 105-41 win.
