Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop finished the game on an 8-0 run to secure a season-opening 81-74 victory over Queens in the first game of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center, Monday morning.

- Yoav Berman (19 points, 5 rebounds, assist)

FIRST HALF
- Isaiah Wilson opened the scoring in the game as he drove down the right side of the lane and finished off glass at the 19:24 mark
- Queens first bucket came just over two minutes into the game as Avantae Parker scored inside
- Kody Clouet's first basket as an Eagle came at the 17:35 mark as Wilson found him open for three and a 5-2 advantage
- Eagles extended the lead to six as Daylen Berry drained a triple
- The Royals made it a one point game after a Yoav Berman three but Pharrell Boyogueno answered with a three for the Eagles for a 14-10 lead
- Game was tied 14-14 near the midway point when Tommy Kamarad dropped in a three
- Eagles scored eight straight points to open up a nine point advantage with 7:45 to play in the half
- It started with two free throws from Berry and then a three in transition by Clouet
- After forcing a turnover the Eagles beat the half court pressure with a win three from Berry to lead 25-16
- A corner three by Chris Ashby ended the run at the 7:34 mark
- Eagles scored a quick five points to build their first double-digit lead as Ed Nnamoko cleaned up the offensive glass and scored followed by a three-point play from Berry to lead 29-19
- Kamarad's stick back with 19 seconds left put the Eagles up 40-35 at the break
SECOND HALF
- The teams traded baskets for the first five minutes of the half as the game was tied 49-49 after a an open three from the left wing by Carson Schwieger
- That three sparked a 7-0 spurt by the Royals that was halted as Berry got to the line and knocked down two free throws to make it a two point lead for Queens at 53-51
- Queens pushed its lead to five points before the Eagles came back to tie the game with 9:09 to play as Kamarad buried a corner three to make it 62-62
- It was a on possession game over the next two minutes when Queens jumped ahead by five after a turnover led to two free throws by Ashby
- Winthrop responded with another three from Clouet and then free throws by Berry tied the game again a 69-69 with just under seven minutes remaining
- Berry put the Eagles back in front as he knocked down a pullup jumper to complete a 7-0 run
- Queens took back the lead moments later as Berman connected on this third three for a 72-71 lead with 4:28 left
- The game was tied at 74-74 with 3:52 to play after Logan Duncomb went 1-of-2 at the foul line
- The Eagles outscored the Royals 8-0 the rest of the way to earn the win
- Berry went 1-for-2 at the foul line to take the lead and then a couple of possessions later Berry hit Duncomb down the middle of the lane for a layup and a three-point lead
- Eagles finished the game 4-for-4 at the line to secure the win
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Eagles finished the game at 39 percent shooting from the floor (shot 39 percent in each half)
- Queens finished at 43 percent from the field
- Winthrop was 8-for-25 behind the arc (32%) while the Royals were 6-for-30 (20%)
- Both teams were solid at the free throw line as Queens connected on 88 percent (14-of-16) and the Eagles shot 81 percent (25-for-31)
- Winthrop had just 10 turnovers in the game leading to 10 points for Queens while forcing 17 turnovers for 15 points
- The battle on the glass was even at 39-39 with the Eagles holding a 16-14 edge on the offensive end
- Eagles worked hard for 20 second chance points while Queens finished with 15
- Battle in the paint went to the Royals 38-30
- Daylen Berry led all scorers with 23 points and was 1-of-3 Eagles in double-figures
- Yoav Berman led Queens with 19 points and was 1-of-5 Royals in double-figures
NOTABLES
- Eagles have won back-to-back season openers and now five of the last seven
- Berry is the first Eagle to drop 20 or more points in a season opener since D.J. Burns Jr. had 30 against Mary Baldwin in 2021
- Winthrop has now won six straight meetings with Queens, all decided by less than 10 points
- The victory was the 680th NCAA D1 win for the program
- This was the first game the Eagles had more steals (11) than turnovers (10) since Nov. 25, 2024 vs. LIU when the team had 12 steals and 10 turnovers
- This is the earliest start date in the history of the program
