NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team and SMU went blow-for-blow in the first half, but the Mustangs erupted for 26 points in the third quarter and 23 more in the fourth to pull away, dropping the Eagles 84-61 at the Music City Classic.
FIRST QUARTER
- SMU opened the scoring at 9:11 with a three from Tyi Skinner for a 3-0 lead.
- Cori Lard immediately answered with a three of her own at 8:59 to tie it 3-3.
- SMU pushed back ahead 5-3 on a jumper from Zahra King at 7:10 before Porter tied it again at 6:42.
- A 6–0 SMU push, capped by a Kyla Deck three at 6:23, gave the Mustangs an 8-5 edge.
- Porter scored again at 6:01, but Winthrop missed both ensuing free throws after the foul.
- SMU extended its lead to 10-8 after a Paris jumper at 3:59.
- A Skinner three at 2:23 pushed the Mustang lead to 13-9.
- Winthrop pulled within 15-11 on a Pierfax jumper inside 1:29, then Ruff tipped in an offensive board at :33 to make it 17-13 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
- Ruff opened the quarter with a fastbreak layup at 9:39 to cut it to 17-15.
- Pierfax tied it 17-17 with a jumper at 9:06.
- Skinner answered at 8:47, before Ruff tied it again 19-19 with a jumper plus a trip to the line at 8:29.
- Deck hit her second three at 8:12 to make it 22-20 SMU.
- Johnson tied it once more at 7:55, then scored again after two offensive rebounds to give Winthrop a 24-22 lead at 7:25.
- King's fastbreak layup at 5:46 tied it 24-24, then a Skinner layup gave SMU a 26-24 edge.
- Lard buried a mid-post jumper at 4:23 to pull within 28-26 after King extended the lead.
- Lard tied it with a three at 3:24, making it 29-29.
- Porter drilled a deep three at 1:17 to put Winthrop ahead 32-31.
- Skinner hit four straight free throws in the final minute, sending SMU to halftime up 35-32.
THIRD QUARTER
- Skinner opened with a clean three at 9:48 to push SMU ahead 38-32.
- SMU converted three straight possessions, with a free throw, layup, and fastbreak layup, stretching the lead to 43-32 at 7:42.
- Pierfax finally broke the drought at 7:15 with a three, closing it to 43-35.
- Hall answered with a three of her own at 7:00, pushing SMU back ahead 46-35.
- Lard scored inside at 6:47 before Ryiah Wilson converted a fastbreak layup at 6:28 to pull within 46-39.
- Wilson followed with a transition three at 5:39 to make it 48-42 after Deck's jumper.
- SMU responded with an avalanche: a Skinner three, a King layup, a Thompson layup, and another Skinner three at 1:10 capped a 12-2 run for a 60-44 lead.
- Ruff added a late layup at :20, but SMU still led 61-46 heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- SMU struck immediately with a transition layup from Skinner at 9:49 to go up 63-46.
- Deck scored again at 8:56, then Paris drilled a three at 8:52 to stretch the lead to 68-46.
- Ibezim finished at the rim at 8:04 before Lard found Pierfax for a layup at 7:39 to stop the bleeding.
- Deck and Brown scored back-to-back buckets to push the gap to 72-48 and eventually 80-54 at 5:27.
- Naomi Wilson finished at the rim at 4:16 to cut it to 80-56.
- Pierfax added another layup at 6:10 earlier in the frame and Wilson added a fastbreak finish at 1:32 to get Winthrop to 59.
- Lard hit both free throws at :52 for Winthrop's final points.
- King hit a jumper at :30 to close the scoring at 84-61.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop shot 47% from the field (25-53) but attempted only 10 free throws to SMU's 19.
- Turnovers swung the game: Winthrop committed 22, leading to 30 SMU points.
- Cori Lard led Winthrop with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
- Pierfax (11), Ruff (11), Porter (10) gave Winthrop four double-digit scorers, combining for 42 points.
- Naomi and Ryiah Wilson combined for 17 points and 9 boards.
- Despite losing the glass 29-28, Winthrop held a 12-11 edge in second-chance points.
- SMU's Tyi Skinner dropped 27 points on 8-12 shooting and five threes. Zahra King added 18.
