NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team erased an early deficit and took control with a dominant middle stretch, riding a scoring trio and 25 points off turnovers to a 75-61 win over Southern Illinois at the Music City Classic.
Mya Pierfax and
Amourie Porter scored 18 points apiece, while
Madison Ruff added 16 for the fourth win of the season.
FIRST QUARTER
- Winthrop struck first as Mya Pierfax knocked down a jumper on the opening possession for a 2-0 lead.
- Southern Illinois answered with eight straight points, fueled by free throws from Indya Green and Jeniah Thompson and a paint jumper from Thompson, to move in front 8-2.
- Amourie Porter stopped the run with a jumper at 6:12, but SIU pushed the margin back to 10-4 on a Kayla Cooper layup.
- Pierfax hit another jumper at 4:49 to trim the deficit to 10-6.
- A mid-range jumper and free throw from Alayna Kraus stretched SIU's lead to 13-6.
- Tocarra Johnson then went to the line at 2:13 and split a pair, cutting the deficit to 13-8.
- Johnson added two more free throws at 1:45 to make it 13-10 before a Malkawi three and late free throw pushed SIU ahead 19-11.
- Porter buried a three at the horn off a Pierfax assist to pull Winthrop within 19-14 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
- Porter opened the frame with a wing three at 9:36 to cut the margin to 19-17.
- After a defensive stop, Porter scored again in the lane at 8:59 to tie the game 19-19.
- Cooper briefly put SIU back in front 21-19, but Porter responded with two free throws at 7:37 to knot it again at 21-21.
- SIU strung together two straight layups from Green to build a 25-21 cushion.
- Pierfax then steadied the Eagles at the line, hitting two free throws at 5:18, and Cori Lard turned a steal into a fastbreak layup at 5:05 to bring it back even at 25-25.
- Pierfax took over the quarter late, splashing a transition three at 3:41 and another at 3:09 to push Winthrop ahead 31-25.
- Ruff's jumper with :43 left gave Winthrop a 33-27 lead, and two SIU free throws in the closing seconds set the halftime score at 33-29 Eagles.
THIRD QUARTER
- Ruff opened the second half with a jumper at 9:01, extending the lead to 35-29.
- Ryiah Wilson buried a three at 7:27 to stretch the advantage to 38-29, Winthrop's first nine-point lead.
- After two free throws by Tkiyah Nelson cut it to 38-31, Porter answered with a jumper and a foul, then knocked down the free throw to make it 41-31.
- Johnson continued to control the glass, earning trips to the line and converting at 6:03 to push the margin to 43-31.
- Wilson scored in transition off a steal at 5:25, and Ruff followed with a fastbreak layup at 4:57 to blow it open at 47-33.
- Johnson's tip-in at 1:56 and Ruff's free throws in the final 90 seconds kept SIU at arm's length as Winthrop closed the period up 55-40.
FOURTH QUARTER
- SIU opened the quarter with two free throws from Ternadoo Agatha Agba, but Pierfax immediately answered with a fastbreak layup and bonus free throw to keep Winthrop in front 58-42.
- Pierfax stepped into another transition three at 8:10, giving the Eagles their largest lead at 61-42.
- Naomi Wilson dropped in a paint jumper at 6:27 to steady the offense after an SIU mini-run.
- Johnson again punished SIU on the offensive glass, grabbing multiple offensive rebounds on one possession and hitting four straight free throws at 4:05 to make it 67-51.
- Kraus and Thompson fueled a late SIU push with mid-range jumpers, but Wilson responded with a three at 2:53 to stretch the margin back to 71-55.
- Ruff added a late triple from the wing at :27 for Winthrop's final field goal and a 75-59 edge before SIU scored at the buzzer to reach 61.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop shot 46.8% from the field and knocked down 8 threes, while holding Southern Illinois to just 2-of-15 from deep.
- The Eagles forced 20 turnovers, converting them into 25 points, including 12 in the second half.
- Winthrop dominated the third quarter defensively, holding SIU to 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting while going a perfect 9-for-9 at the line in the frame.
- Second-chance production leaned slightly SIU's way (10-8), but Tocarra Johnson's six offensive rebounds mitigated nearly all of SIU's advantage.
- Winthrop's balanced scoring trio, Pierfax (18), Porter (18), Ruff (16), accounted for 52 of the Eagles' 75 points and combined to shoot 16-of-27 from the floor.
- The free-throw advantage mattered as Winthrop earned 33 attempts and made 23, while SIU finished 15-for-19.
- The Eagles turned a 19-14 first-quarter deficit into a 41-21 middle-game surge which ultimately decided it.
